mellotron 'master tapes'?

Re: [newmellotrongroup] mellotron 'master tapes'?

2012-04-04 by Bruce Daily

Hi all-
I think that the term "Master Tape" may be a bit misleading. 3/8" tapes exist only on Mellotrons (and within the manufacturing process). The reel has writing that indicate 2 sections of recordings. It is probably 2 seperate sounds to fill 2 frames. I do wonder what the "T.T. Choir" is, though.
Isn't this the way Mellotron Archives produced their tapes (on large reels)?

A melltron 'master tape' (on reels, not a tape frame) is being auction in the current VEMIA auction.

I'm intrigued as to its provenance...

Hi again-
Looked at the larger image of the tape reels. The second voice indicates "string sec" for the last voice. If you account for wobbly marker writing on the reel, the second voice may be "F. S. Choir" or Female Solo Choir. But I may be wrong.

I doubt these are masters, just two sets of tapes on a reel. It will be easy to find out whether these came from Streetly or London office. Streetly are blendable but London tapes have a larger guard band 'twixt tracks causing the sound to dip dramatically when blending.

Are the master tapes really on 3/8"? Why?

The Ted Taylor choir is the worst sound in the mellotron canon. It was recorded through a sofa using a loudspeaker as a microphone!

I'm still waiting for 'Shouting 'DAAAAAA' Down A Cardboard Tube' to get cleaned up and made available. My favourite.

Thanks, Martin, THAT makes sense. T.T. Choir. I bet the choir voice on a tape set I took off a frame was one and the same. Your describe that sound perfectly, as I couldn't tell it was a choir unless it was played several times. Very unusable (unless one wished to confuse).

Maybe there are original masters and copy masters. I would think the original masters would be on 1/4" tape.
