Hello in Mellotron land, I'm new here.

Hello in Mellotron land, I'm new here.

2012-02-27 by capnreverb

I guess I joined the old group that a member here was kind enough to point out to me so I'll post here instead. Thanks!

Just joined and this is my first post. Ever since I was a kid I wanted a Mellotron and twenty five years later it finally came true. I have a m400 with two sets of tapes in my attic recording studio. Works ok but I have to futz with it a lot, but I knew when I bought it that there was going to be a learnig curve. I just love it. One set of tapes is the standard flute, cello, and strings. The other set is kinda weird. It has six sounds each divided at the center key, plus some sound effects at the end of one of the sounds. How common was that? The crappy part about that is that the sound effects are on the choir half, leaving me only an octave of choir, I wish it had been the flutes! The choir is my favorite sound, so I just ordered a new set of tapes with full choirs from Markus Resch. I look forward to reading and hopefully getting a few question answered.

Thanks!

Welcome! Nice bunch of guys here. Quite supportive of all the different breeds of tape and non-tape Mellotrons and Chamberlins. Not much snobby elitism around these parts. Even some fun optical talk mixed in!

Hello and Welcome,

Jim is correct; a great group here. In the spirit of optical talk, yes I do wear glasses.

Hi Jason:
You're correct; that 2nd set of tapes is a weird duck. Somebody's custom job-cram as many mellotron sounds as possible onto one tape rack! What are the other sounds?

Best wishes,

Dan

One is Cello/Flute
Two is strings/ ? sounds like Genesis/organ
Three is Vibes/Choir and some sound effects at the end (thunder, lion, telephone, laugh track, applause).
Odd thing is that when i get it close to in tune, everything is close but the flutes on that half are out of tune. Weird.
I just picked up a reprinted manaul on Ebay for $40, expensive but it at least has some usefull info. The cover has a Mellotron, a Neumann u87 and a can of Pepsi. You would of thought it would have been a bong or a bottle of beer, not Pepsi.

Is Mixed Choir the same as the 8 Choir? That's the most famous one. There's also a combined Choir that's 8 Choir+Boys Choir. Never heard of String Quartet. Is it Cello+Viola+Violins?

I just received a set of tuned Cello/Chamberlin Violins/MkII Flute on EMI tape from Streety Electronics. The EMI tape is the original Mellotron tape...plays well and sounds great. The Chamberlin Violins are the same as the MkII Violins, but at least one generation newer. They sound somewhere between the M400 Violins and the MkII Violins. In my "purist" past, I would have ordered untuned tapes, but it's worth it to get tuned tapes. I'm pretty sure yours will default to tuned tapes.

Re: [newmellotrongroup] Re: Hello in Mellotron land, I'm new here.

Yes, it's the 8 voice chior and its an incorrect traditional string quartet of three violins and cello. Seems odd that no one could find a violist for a true quartet. I have the viloins on another tape, but I plan on using this tape the most, and the quartet sounded a bit more full with the cello added. I did not see tapes for sale the at Streetly site, maybe I missed something? What do they charge for a set racked ready to go?
I would love to have the complete vibes, celeste and another sound as well. Gets so expensive. Maybe somebody wants to trade a rack, I can see myself using the stock flute/cello/strings the least.
I have not done a lot of research yet on new tapes, are there any big differences between Streetly's and Markus's tapes?

Welcome Jason!
Glad to have you. Get ready for good advice and better abuse!
Since you like the choir sounds, get a set of Streetly tapes with the Russian Choir.

String Section is 3 Violins+Cello. Sounds like the same combination. It was used by Tangerine Dream and, I thing, The Strawbs.

You'd have to contact Streetly for the frame cost. The exchange rate changes at least daily. I bought the tapes and laced a frame I already have...a really fun job :-( If I remember correctly, they were $275 + shipping.

Streetly's library is located at http://mikedickson.org.uk/tron/ and is maintained by our own Mike Dickson.

I only know about the Streetly tapes; never used Marcus' tapes, although a few others here have. Streetly uses the original EMI tape. If your current frames are originals, then it's very likely that they have EMI tape, unless maybe they were made by Sound Sales in Connecticut. Streetly also has a lot of newer sounds like the Ian McDonald Classical Flute, a new String Section, Russian Choir and several others that were recorded by members of this group.

I did not see tapes for sale the at Streetly site, maybe I missed something? What do they charge for a set racked ready to go?

In Markus' tapes, Mixed Choir is different from 8 Voice Choir. I have both and there's a very pronounced difference.

For the record, our mixed choir is known as Combined Choir and is a blend of Male/Female/Boys all singing slightly out of tune with one another! Actually it's a splendid but rarely heard sound just like the 15 Choir, but in the case of the latter I can well understand.

Proving popular at present from our new sounds are: Wilden Church Organ, Pump Organ, New String Section, New Cello, Sad Strings and Miller Brass.

Just for info., we are one man down as Brian, our engineer has had a major back operation. This means tape frames are a little slow at present after a sudden run on our stocks.

Thanks John, I will let him know. Brian is a fiesty 74 year old so we are sure he'll make a good recovery having suffered severe pain over the last two years. One thing to recommend the UK is the free National Health Service who have done a splendid job. I dread to think what the treatment would have cost in the US!

Hi Martin,
Please pass on my best wishes, backs are tricky things, I hope the

There would be no cost. He would have taken it like a man, hence, no operation necessary.

Thanks John, I will let him know. Brian is a fiesty 74 year old so we are sure he'll make a good recovery having suffered severe pain over the last two years. One thing to recommend the UK is the free National Health Service who have done a splendid job. I dread to think what the treatment would have cost in the US!

Just for info., we are one man down as Brian, our engineer has had a major back operation. This means tape frames are a little slow at present after a sudden run on our stocks.

Not only that but it’s the best care in the world….if you can afford it or as Frank says you sneak across the border which is apparently pretty easy you are given free health care, a place to live , an education, and spending money. Fortunately our economy is strong and our leader has a plan……. L

Bernie -
No. It's kind of hard to describe what it sounds like. The harmonies are incredibly close and tight, so instead of sounding big, it actually sounds kind of small and thin. Think of the background "Ahhhs" on 10cc's "I'm not in Love" and you're pretty close. Depending on how you adjust the tone control, sometimes it doesn't even sound like voices at all.
To be honest, I was kind of disappointed by it at first. But I did find that when you use the half-speed option on Markus' machine, the tape delivers this very cool, otherwordly ambient sound that can be very useful if you need that type of sound in your music.
Hope that helps.

Hey Rick-
I had a choir sound like you described. It was a mixture of some sort. It didn't sound like voices until I listened to them for a while. The sound was not even as distinct as the Birotron Choir. Weird. It was on a frame with Brass B on track A, and Oboe on track C. I actually had to edit the tapes to pull the starts in line. They had obviously been abused! I replaced it with Angry Strings/Rick B's French Horn/Chamber Woodwinds.

Rick, I just found it on the Mellotron Archives website. It's the same as Streetly's Combined Choir, which I had at one time. I can hear the Boys Choir in the sample.

Bruce, those are 3 sounds that I want. How do you like them?

Hey Bernie-
I like 'em. It represents the newer generation of 'tron sounds. Very clean.
The Angry Strings are really a soft split (2 cellos, 2 violins), and very balanced & intense. You can just hear a few instances of re-bowing, as they had to be played loud & ran out of bow. The starts are very abrupt. A heavy sound.
The French Horn is very pure. Barely any strain, even on the high notes. Rick B, you must've done lung expansion excercises like crazy before this session!
Chamber Woodwinds are airy & clear. Another soft split. The Streetly sample is a good example of it.
The French Horn mixes with the other voices very well.

Thanks Bruce. I didn't realize the Chamber Woodwinds is a split. I still want it though. The sample does sound really nice.

It's a staggered split between two layers, alto flute/C flute and English horn/oboe

The warmer weather on the west cost would be nice, but if it was closer to home I could possibly bring one of each type of the tron keyboards for a nice museum display.

Any other ideas out there?

I'm with you on NYC, Tom, but Newington, CT would be even better. There are plenty of cheap motels along the Berlin Turnpike that you can rent by the month, week, day or hour. BYOL(ysol).

I'll third (at least) the west coast concept. I'll even be specific and suggest Vancouver, Canada! (No one ever comes here, so I figure the suggestion can't hurt!)

The last Mellotron Summit that I attended was Moses Lake 1992. But it was a blast, David and Sandi were generous hosts, and it was great hanging with Markus, Terry, Robert, Froth, Tom and Paul G, etc. We filmed instructional videos, replaced tape frames, listened to the Mellotron library, talked tape and prog rock, and ate way too many incredible homemade pies.

I'll never forget waking up on the morning of Day 2, in my sleeping bag, crammed between an M300, an acrylic M400, a Chamberlin M1, the back of a Mk V, and if I remember correctly, a 2600. And I brought back a Mk V and a Chamberlin!

I also remember falling asleep at 3am to the sounds of a room full of people talking about Mellotrons, and then waking up at 9am.....to a room full of people talking about Mellotrons!

Those late 1980's/early 90's were exciting times!

Nameplate scan?

2012-03-07 by Jim Blair

Hey all!

I'm wondering if anyone has a clear high res scan of the M400
nameplate. Or even better, a vector file!

I'm assembling the cabinet for my M400 (built from my spare parts
supply), and need to supply a vector to our local engraving shop. I
have access to another M400, but I thought that I'd ask here before
disassembling my friend's Tron. lol

Thanks guys!

Hi Jim,

Get an aluminium plate laser etched and then get them to apply oxidising solution which will give you nice black print like the original.

Thanks! That's the plan. I've had other nameplates etched in exactly that way. But the shop needs a vector file to operate the laser.

Thanks! That's the plan. I've had other nameplates etched in exactly that way. But the shop needs a vector file to operate the laser.

Hi Jim,

Get an aluminium plate laser etched and then get them to apply oxidising solution which will give you nice black print like the original.

Jim
