OT: Whitney

Re: [newmellotrongroup] OT: Whitney

Glad someone does. And as much as I hate to say it, that note from that song is sung between 15 and 20 cents flat.

I'm not as sensitive to that, as some of my favorite singers are all over the place if you scope them. But, they all know where they SHOULD be, and so did Ms. Houston. I just had problems with her interpretation per the article you sent.

Sarah Vaughn she was not. What she did was fashion, showbiz, not music. Music is incidental to people in her situation. Confluential to selling shit.

She sang Hugh Hopper's "Memories" with Material and they had the nerve to put it out as a 12"
That was some sad shit.

OT: Whitney Houston - Memories

2012-02-24 by Robert

Gino, thanks for pointing out to us that Whitney Houston sang "Memories"; I never knew that.

I didn't follow Whitney Houston, but I always loved Soft Machine.

Respectfully, I don't think Material's version with WH is all that bad. "Memories" is such a great song, it's hard to ruin it.

So below is Material's cover and the original Soft Machine single.

BTW, RIP Mr. Hugh Hopper...

Correction - OT: Whitney Houston - Memories

2012-02-24 by Robert

I didn't mean to infer that the original recording of this song was done by Soft Machine; it's their version that I associate the song with.

To the best of my knowledge, I believe it was actually 1st recorded by The Wilde Flowers, the predecessor group to Soft Machine and Caravan which included several members of both line ups of these subsequent groups.

Re: [newmellotrongroup] Correction - OT: Whitney Houston - Memories - still OT

Robert -
Still OT, but when I went to watch/listen to the Soft Machine version (thank you very much), I clicked over onto this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=frhOmiyifp0&feature=related
Being a Holdsworth fan, this was very cool to watch - live at Montreux, Allan not only sings a little (eek), but at 2:05 he's ear-tuning his SG with the volume down - gotta love it....

I was a bit harsh.. They know the song, they played it. They did nothing with it that wasn't altready done. When it came out I was expecting more. How do you compete with Robert Wyatt ?

The upside is Hugh got paid, I liked Hugh Hopper, did a recording with him and Alan Gowen in the early 80s. A peak experience.

What other covers of "Memories" do you know of ?
RW is one of my favorite musicians. I have all of his solo albums and numerous albums he guests on. You're right, it's hard to compete with him.
The upside is Hugh got paid, I liked Hugh Hopper, did a recording with him and Alan Gowen in the early 80s. A peak experience.

Alan Gowen (RIP) died at a very young age from Leukemia in 1981. The Gigamesh albums are wonderful; same with his contributions to National Health. I have the albums "Two Rainbows Daily", "Soft Heap", and "Rogue Element" too. Also, "Before A Word Is Said" with Phil Miller, Richard Sinclair, and Trevor Tomkins. Were you involved in any of these projects ? That must have been cool !

OT: Alan Holdsworth

2012-02-26 by Robert

Vance,

Thank you for your post and comments...

I like AH too and have both albums he did with Tempest as well as 'Igginbottoms Wrench from 1969, Gong's Expresso / Gazeuse! album from 1976, the 1st U.K. album, his work with the Tony William's Lifetime, Gorden Beck, and several of his solo albums. He is a fine guitarist indeed.

Soft Machine's "Bundles" (studio album) from 1975 (the clip you posted was a live performance of 1 of the songs from that album) is amongst one of my favorite 1970s jazz-fusion records.
