And Beyond

And Beyond

2012-02-21 by mellotronmadness

This is I think, is a good example of how much a mellotron can be processed and still be recognisable. It started life as a backing track to a cover of Woolly's song "The Will to Fly". I used the Redtron vst as I had already recorded the vocal and ukulele track and couldn't be bothered fighting #1565 over the tuning , it has had a lot of processing and a bit of microkorg added. I really like the resulting sound although it's nothing like what I started with, I still think it sounds like a mellotron is in there somewhere.

I won't be online for a bit after this, I am going to try and give up the internet for lent!

Happy Easter

First use of choir?

2012-02-21 by Jim Blair

Hey all,

I was blasting the M4000D through the studio last night, and started
wondering......was Dancing With the Moonlit Knight the first recorded
use of 8v choir?

Thanks,

Jim

Hi Jim,

I think Rick Wakeman beat Genesis by three years on Six Wives.

Interesting, I hadn't thought of that one. Six Wives and Selling England both came out in 73 though, so I'm not sure which was first. I'm under the impression that Selling England was released late in the year.....

Thanks,

Jim

I think it's a toss-up between Rick's Six Wives and The Strawbs' Bursting at
the Seams ('Lay Down'), both released January '73, both recorded late '72.
Unless anyone knows better...

The Yes live Excerpts (Hallelujah) and Six Wives were both recorded/ released before SEBTP. Strawbs - Bursting at the Seams (1972) had some choir didn't it?

Re: [newmellotrongroup] And Beyond

2012-02-22 by Bruce Daily

Nice work, Mark. Very dense and ambient.
In a strange way, it reminds me of some of the music made by the Native American artist Coyote Oldman. On his recording "House Made of Dawn" he plays different native flutes. Lots of multi-tracking creates a very dense mix. He messes with the pitch to get some interesting undertones. Very atmospheric.

It was a split recording of 4 males and 4 females which generated all
three popular choirs; the 8, the males and the females! It was recorded at IBC,
London and one of the singers was a chap named Ted Taylor who went on to
record the dullest sounding choir ever. We are currently rescuing it from
oblivion once we can mitigate the distortion and the fact he used a
loudspeaker as a microphone.

Do you know what year they recorded it ?

I do know that Tannoy microphones were more acceptable than they are now.
You are talking about a difficult audio problem. I can't think of a solution that could get any sort of consensus. Good thing you guys are the boss. :)

To avoid confusion, it was a British Ted Taylor and not the soul singer.

Classic Mellotron Setlist.

2012-02-26 by Jim Blair

Hey all!

So I have this insanely good M4000D, and I'm trying to dig up all my
favorite classic Tron songs/riffs. But I need suggestions! Here's
what I've got so far.....(I've included what I understand to be the
appropriate tapes, but I'm certainly open to corrections.)

Cinema Show solo (8v choir) Yes, there's a ProSoloist here.
Hero and Heroine (8v choir and brass?)
Autumn (3 violins and flutes through a leslie?) Yes, there's a 122 here.
Strawberry Fields (flute, detuned 140 cents?)
Watcher of the Skies intro (3 violins/brass....and....accordion?)
Starless (3v)
Epitaph (3v)
Seven Stones (Tron organ, not sure which one yet, 3v)

Thanks guys!

Watcher has left hand Bass Accordion in the intro (MkI/II station 2, track c).
Seven Stones is probably Church Organ (MkI/II station 6, track c).

Thanks Mike, I forgot about that list. Turns out one of my albums from 1986 is on the list. Funny stuff.

what I've got so far.....(I've included what I understand to be the
appropriate tapes, but I'm certainly open to corrections.)

Thanks Mike, I forgot about that list. Turns out one of my albums from
1986 is on the list. Funny stuff.

I posted a pretty detailed review here last week. I'll resend it as a
private email.

One of my favorite mellotron heavy records is Symphonic Pictures by the German Prog rock band Schicke Fuhrs Frohling. Over the top mellotron stuff, I think the whole trio plays them on the lp.

Re: SFF

2012-02-29 by 'tronster

Hi Jason: Check out the SFF 'Live' CD. Just crammed with dual mellotron on every track. Even 'Ammernoon' live. The other good LP is 'Sunburst'. Very little tron on 'Ticket to Everywhere.'

Cheers,
Dan
