Lacing a Tape Frame

Lacing a Tape Frame

2012-02-16 by tron400

It's been a few years since I've laced a frame, and it was a pretty old one. I vaguely remember loosening 2 bolts at each end of the existing tape, taping one end of a new tape to one end of the existing tape, letting the frame springs drag the new tape through the tape path, then re-tightening the bolts. The process is a little fuzzy in my mind, though. I'll be lacing one of the newer Streetly frames within a couple of weeks. Is there any better way to lace the new frames? I don't have one of those secret lacing tools I've heard so much about.

The best technique I think involves a bottle of wine, some classic Al Green and a pair of handcuffs.

A three foot steel rod comes in handy to put the spools on. Arse!

Just don't forget to make sure any steel, metal rods etc. are not magnetic.

One of the trons here has the flute/8voice/3violins tapes installed backwards. By accident of course. But it sounds excellent. Unique, in a really nice way.

By the way, M4000D #666 arrived today. What an incredible instrument. Beautiful to play, look at, and listen too. It sounds like my best tape tron, on a really good day.....every time I turn it on. Exactly what I was hoping for.

Markus, if you are hanging around here, thanks again for a spectacular achievement.

I'm sure the M4000D is wonderful, it's passed through my mind to buy one and I also considered the memotron, but neither of them will ever sound like this:

You might think that a good thing, but there is something wonderfully unpredictable about #1565 which lends a nice touch of serendipity to my "music" making.

Re: Lacing a Tape Frame

2012-02-18 by mellotronmadness

It wouldn't be easy, you would need to use the pitch control and it would have to alter some notes and not others, if you listen to the intro the D+E at the end wobble but the other notes don't. I don't see how you could do that live on an M4000D, and if you had bought one I guess you wouldn't want to.

Specially requested, due to nicknames that friends and clients have given to Mellotrons that I've owned over the years. The White Devil, The Hellotron, Satan's Dresser, etc.

Re: [newmellotrongroup] Re: Lacing a Tape Frame

Bernie and interested parties,

Obtain a 3' length of 3/8" wide x 1/8" thick bending quality brass or aluminium from a metal stockist. Find the halfway point and bend it round on itself to create forks with a nice radius of 1.5" on the bend itself. File the ends smooth and use that as a pusher or Service Tool K if you will!

Take the first tape (already cut across the punched hole) and place it under the back screws until the 'start' mark is just before the head gap/ middle of playback head. Fasten the LEFT screw only.

Unwind the tape and let 6' approx. fall over the front of your tron. Use your right hand to lift the length in the air and drop into the storage box.

Cut the tape at the next punched hole and place under the front screws, leaving approx 10" dangling. Tighten the LEFT screw.

Continue until all the tapes are in the storage box. THEN.....one by one......

Push each tape either side of the top roller with your new creation. Once the loops have dropped, unfasten the turnbuckle and insert. Compare the final loop lengths by parking the back bar in the frame and placing the front clamp bar back on the frame. The tapes should just be under tension in the park position. If not, pull the tapes from the front until they are.

Finally, trim the ends.

TIP: Unfasten the front clamp bar of the tape frame and place on the keyboard pillars while you lace. It improves access.

Best,

M (not bad for a lazy Sunday morning)

Re: Lacing a Tape Frame

Done!! Not a pleasant job lacing a frame, especially when you don't have the right tools. It must have taken about 4 or 5 hours, but now I can sit back and enjoy the new tapes.

BTW, I now have a set of slightly used Flute/M400 Violins/Cello tapes if anyone is interested. BYOF.
