Shameless self plug; w/ Mellotron!

Shameless self plug; w/ Mellotron!

2012-01-29 by Sean

Ok. Here's how I'm currently using Mellotron out and about in the wider world.

http://soundcloud.com/tdintbl/long-black-veils-rust
(Wish the soundman hadn't had left the flute and mellotron so far in the back.)

I just joined this band a bit over two months ago. Met them at a local open mic night. They liked my flute playing. I mentioned mellotrons and organs. The band leader got excited, said he could use mellotron and organ work! I play mostly clonewheel Hammond. (vb3 is amazing. It fools me) I do put in the occasional melly bits and often flute bits. Even the odd harmony vocals and mandolin work.

If you like what you hear, like us on facebook.

Thanks.

Good stuff, think the balance is about right.

Just as an additional thought, I think one of my many mellotron playing sins is to make the mellotron too prominent in recordings. I think this stems from my love of the instrument, I want everyone to hear it! I think sometimes it's more subtle and effective quietly playing in the background just supporting the harmonic structure of the piece.

Mark

PS That's not to say it isn't great used as an " in your face" solo instrument as well.

I am guilty and going to hell...rather that than some of the more obvious things i am guilty of. Furthermore I hate when Fripp remixes the Crimson classics and places the trons further in the background.

That's what I was aiming for here in a Pinder-ish sort of way. Sound guy just didn't have the levels right. Some other band was there and they told us they thought the soundwork was shit as well. The gig we're doing Thursday night has a reputation for even shittier sound, so I hear.

As we keep going, we've got some upcoming tunes that have given me excuse for more violins, the MkII church organ sound (whatever it's actually called), halfspeed brass, clarinet, and even that lady singing on the M1 Chamberlins. I'm rather excited about all this.
