M300 Woolly's string sound

M300 Woolly's string sound

2008-01-29 by Mark Pring

I think this must now be a lost sound. Woolly says he
uses it live but if Fiddling Meanly is any guide it no
longer exists, I understand that he uses the mark II
strings in studio recordings, I certainly have'nt
heard anything since BJH Live that sounds right. I
would love to be able to reproduce that sound which is
what led to my mellotron obsession, but I suspect
that when I finally get 1565 working ( and it is
certainly going to need new tapes ) that I am going to
have to settle for King Crimson rather than 70's BJH.

I am sure the M300 string tapes still exist but I
haven't heard the sound I want, I am not sure if it is
a characteristic of the M300 and the spring line
reverb, Woolly uses an M400 these days using the m300
strings but it is not the same. I haven't quite been
able to determine if this is because he wants a
different sound or that the old sound is unobtainable.
I suspect the latter.

PS I should not post when pissed!

Tell us the story about the bass accordion, Uncle Martin, pleeeeeze?
We have covered this many times.  Yes, yes, yes, the sound of BJH is to do with the M300A violins going through the M300 spring delay line with little of the original signal left.  It's all to do with the M300 itself.

Should have wished for an M300! Mark II strings on the
new tapes eventually.

Hi Martin,
Just want to be clear about this once and for all, as
I understand it, if you want that sound you have to
have an M300?

I've got the M300A violins on a Streetly frame, and if you experiment with various reverbs and delays leaving just a tad of the original signal left as Martin hinted at, you can get close. Very close.
Actually I think you can get allot closer than even Woolly got on his m400 when he toured recently. His tron sounded very dry in the live mix.

On what I heard I didn't think that Woolly got even
within shouting distance. From "One drop onwards"
although he is producing some very good music the
mellotron sounds are very different and generally
quite disappointing. I understand that the dreaded
M-tron makes an appearance on Caterwauling, although
admittedly not on a track that Woolly had much input
on.

No, you need to get an Alesis PicoVerb, stick the M300As through it, turn down the treble and leave the mix set to really wet, nay drenched with little original signal.  It sounds VERY close and very distant.

Ok that has cheered me up a bit, just need to get
1565 going, a set of new tapes and hope the alesis
picothingy doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

Sounds like an excellent optional add-on for the M4000, Martin….

Or would getting an amp with a nice long-spring Hammond reverb unit and go straight off the head blocks to the amp work??

Vance
