half-OT: Patrick Moraz Orchestron

half-OT: Patrick Moraz Orchestron

2011-09-08 by Dieter

Hello

Because there is no "NewOrchestronGroup" I'm asking this question here:
As a Vako Orchestron owner and fan of the machine, I know that there is a four-manual Orchestron especially made in 1975 for Patrick Moraz, and he took it on the road for the Yes "Relayer" tour. Now, I would like to see footage of Pat and the Orchestron on that tour. But, all the youtube vids for the Relayer tour show no sign of this rare gem.

Has anyone more info on this? Or do you know where to find video footage of this tour including this instrument?

Thanks

Dieter

No pics that I could find, but there's some info on the Roth Handle website (sorry, I don't know how to put the double-dots over the "a"):

Having met Patrick on several occasions, and discussed the Orchestron at length, including playing the triple at the factory, and having seen the Relayer tour 7 times, I never saw, nor heard the instrument!
He was far from satisfied with it, and I’ll stop there as he had more to say about the whole deal.
The triple was in reality a double with a small synth keyboard on top.
The last time I visited Vako, I saw the front panel, stripped of controls, resulting in a labeled panel, and nothing more.
As far as a 4 manual version (seen by me only in a picture), that’s all I’d believe might still exist.
NONE of them sounded good, that’s why he dropped the project.
A novel idea, like the Optigan organ with one problem, it didn’t work well.

To the best of my knowledge, the 4 manual one - the Model X Phase 4, had only two slots for disks and two synthesizers along with a smaller sequencer keyboard.

It was not a 4 disk machine but a two disk machine. The other slots were where the disks were stored.

Patrick Moraz never used this model and it was only a prototype that was partially functional.

As Tony mentioned - Patrick had the three manual version which never worked well because of touring rigors. It also was a semi-functional prototype.
