Tapes vs. Weather

Hi all - I'm living in eastern Iowa and we're experiencing weather that's all over the map, coming off a heat wave in July that saw us in the upper '90s a lot. It's cooler now, but we still having fairly high humidity, and I'm living in an attic without air conditioning. Because of this, I've simply put my tape racks away in boxes and retired the Tron until the weather stabilizes somewhat - hopefully in September. Is there anything else I should be doing, or am I over reacting?

Martin, shouldn't I at least line my mouth and esophagus with aluminum foil or something? Coat the tape paths with a mixture of Epsom salts, malt vinegar, and cilantro? Pack the spill box with surgical cotton?

A well adjusted 'tron will work whatever the weather. These tales of humidity and cold are an excuse for lack of adjustment and poorer than poor maintenance. A well maintained mellington will sing sweetly through wars and pestilence, rape and famine, four things I want to reinstate but rebadged as Lifestyle Living.

If you can store it in a stable environment without a lot of humidity, that would be good. When you do decide to crank it back up, clean the capstan well and go through the whole machine and check for oxidization. Nip that right away. Otherwise, it should be fine.

I'm keeping her ship shape, Frank, but I don't have many options on an ac (low humidity) environment for it.

Shouldn't matter. Might have to spruce up the track selector. That's about the only thing that rusts.

OK this has been my FAVORITE thread of the day, and there have been many.
I want to say that my tron has lived in a Long Island basement where the
water tables are ankle high and the air humidity is often 200% or more ,
the winters are cold and clammy. It has moved from there to hot smoky
stages. No problems. I also want to know what kind of delay Tony uses.
I'll bet it is expensive!
I have a weakness for spring reverbs and tape echoes (more for the murky
flavor they add than the delay) but I would love a nice EMT plate!

Right now, Tom, I'm a bit limited on gear, and I'm using the spring reverb in my Fender Blues Jr. It works OK, but yeah, sign me up for an EMT too. So, do you want a Roland or a CopyCat?

We have some great staircases at the museum and I have payed in them and
run some mixes through! We did some vocal tracks with Cathedral in the
Palace theater staircase long ago - nothing beats the acoustic method. I
have heard great things about UA's plug-in simulation of the EMT-something
you might want to check out Tony-i hope to in the near future!

John,I like the copicat if it has tubes- the Roland works great but the
preamp doesn't do anything for me. I use a Dynachord and an ep2
echoplex..

To get back on-topic...

One thing I've always done in the studio was to save all those little packets of silica gel (Do Not Eat) that come in the packing of most audio gear. I'll use a piece of gaffer's tape and stick them to the inside of every piece of studio gear, the insides of my racks, my keyboards, etc. My tron has a few inside as well. I'm not sure how well they work, but it gives me an added feeling of safety against humidity and moisture. I figure, it can't hurt.

But do they stay inside in an AC environment? That must make some difference, Tony. I would also assume that Jack's studio is air conditioned.

We have some great staircases at the museum and I have payed in them and
run some mixes through! We did some vocal tracks with Cathedral in the
Palace theater staircase long ago - nothing beats the acoustic method. I
have heard great things about UA's plug-in simulation of the EMT-something
you might want to check out Tony-i hope to in the near future!

John,I like the copicat if it has tubes- the Roland works great but the
preamp doesn't do anything for me. I use a Dynachord and an ep2
echoplex..

Periodically take them and dry them in the oven (warm). Desiccators become saturated over time and cease to work.

Did it years ago at the University (one of them) I attended, and it worked quite well.

Obviously a cement block stairwell was “live”, and two stories tall, so the result was great.

It was really the only option at the time (circa 1976), love a “wet” mix!

I seriously doubt you have higher humidity than Florida, (average in Tampa is 83%).

None of my 25+ synths, or Mellotron suffers from the humidity, and no additional protection is used.

I think using them keeps them dry.

To get back on-topic...

One thing I've always done in the studio was to save all those little packets of silica gel (Do Not Eat) that come in the packing of most audio gear. I'll use a piece of gaffer's tape and stick them to the inside of every piece of studio gear, the insides of my racks, my keyboards, etc. My tron has a few inside as well. I'm not sure how well they work, but it gives me an added feeling of safety against humidity and moisture. I figure, it can't hurt.

run some mixes through! We did some vocal tracks with Cathedral in the
Palace theater staircase long ago - nothing beats the acoustic method. I
have heard great things about UA's plug-in simulation of the EMT-something
you might want to check out Tony-i hope to in the near future!
