Hammond B3?

Hammond B3?

2011-06-11 by john.mcnamara65

So, a drummer friend messaged me that his guitarist(who owns more vintage gear{but no Mellotrons} than you can imagine) wanted to know if I would come over and play His B3 on some Pink Floyd tunes.....(i think he has no clue about how to play the keyboard....) I was like... RIGHT NOW PLEASE! anyway, i've only sat down at a Hammond a couple days in my life. I have been learning the tunes and watching some online tutorials. (go ahead and f'n laugh!) Any advice from you regular Hammond users? I think i'll be o.k. with a basic setting and snapping that Leslie on and Off. Mostly i am thankful for another sitting at a legend.

P.S. He's moving to Hawaii in a few months and will need to sell it.

Glissando with the fleshy palm of your hand as the rounded corners of the B's keys are perfect for it.

Another consideration is the tone control located on the preamp inside the
console. It is an unmarked slotted pot. Full clockwise give high treble and the
spitty sharp Keith Emerson sound. Counter clockwise darkens the output towards a
jazz sound.

And don't forget the RCA aux input located on the left side of the volume
assembly. Play an additional keyboard through the Leslie.

Bill

That's an input jack?!! We used it as an output to power a B3 through a Vox wa wa pedal and into a Fender Twin Reverb amp. Around 3:02 on this tune:

Re: [newmellotrongroup] Re: Hammond B3?

2011-06-14 by william Beith

The RCA jack on the side of the volume rheostat tower is an aux input. I just
played a show using a C3 through a Leslie 147. Instead of bringing a separate
amp for the piano parts I ran a Kurzweil K2000 through the Leslie. The RCA aux
in is full volume so a volume pedal is necessary. Sounded great.

Going a bit deeper, I use a 122 amp from Goff Professional in the Leslie. The
difference between the 122 and 147 amp is the audio is balanced in the 122. I
retrofitted the Leslie with a JBL 15 and JBL horn driver. The horn was so
efficient I had to install an L Pad for balance. So between the tone control and
the L Pad, I can really make the thing spit like Emersons Hammond. And playing
the Mellotron emulations from the Kurzweil through the Leslie creates very
interesting sounds. I add cathedral level reverb to a choir and with the Leslie
on slow speed I get a sound Lennon must have wished for in Tomorrow Never Knows.

Rhodes and Wurlie also sound great. A wonderful little trick for studio use.

Bill

Goff are my neighbors...sort of. Their shop is a couple of miles from my house.

I've always preferred the sound of a 122 over a 147. Maybe it's because of the balance.

Re: [newmellotrongroup] Re: Hammond B3?

2011-06-14 by william Beith

As far as I know the only difference between the 122 and 147 is the balanced
audio of the 122. Mechanically both are the same.
The amp is built for Goff by M&S Organ in Chicago which drop ships. These amps
cost about $500 without tubes and are completely new, not rebuilds.
Awesome quality and sound.

Bill
