Anybody else get funny looks when trying to buy
ispropyl alcohol? Talk about signing registers? What
else besides cleaning trons can you do with this
stuff?

ummm...
where the heck are you buying it from?
you can get 92/93% at any market or pharmacy OTC,
no questions needed or asked. it's just common
'rubbing alcohol' with hundreds of uses, including
as a disinfectant.

are you buying like 100% or something from a chemical
supplier or something?

do you need something more than the common stuff?
just curious why this would be an issue anywhere?

all over the house, for cleaning tape heads,
removing adhesive left behind by stickers, for
cleaning CDs and DVDs, even for the windshield
and wiper blades on the car...]

Might be a New Zealand thing, it isn't easy to get
here, you can get 40% mixed with xylol ie paint
stripper easily enough, I've been told that it can be
used for making metamphetamine or extracting oil from
cannabis, what % do you need for cleaning?

I have managed to get one of the pharmacists to sell
me some, I need enough to soak 35 tape rollers. But I
got some very funny looks going around town looking
for it. And even stranger looks when I told them what
it was for. I have never said the word Mellotron to
any one in New Zealand with out getting a blank stare.
I haven't met anyone here who has ever noticed that
the intro to Strawberry Fields isn't played on an
acoustic flute.

that's really pretty strange.
i can vouch for the cannabis thing - it's one of the
few things that can get the nasty resinous goo off
of things [thought it does, i think, technically
just turn it into a stain, so it will turn your
fingers all dark and stained...]
i mean... i have heard that it can do this.
since i don't manufacture meth i can't comment.

the commonly found here in the states stuff can be
as much as 93-94% if you look around. you do need
to look at the label, as some is as dilute as 70%,
but every grocery store here will have at least a
few bottles of 92-93%, which is adequate for the
cleaning of tape heads, and i guess pinch rollers
for a mellotron. i have some rubber cleaner that
was given to me by a copier tech friend after,
i think it was fritz here on the list, mentioned
using it. it did a wonderful job on some rollers
on an old analogue 2-track machine i have.

just tell them it's for cleaning tape heads.
that's a very common use for it.

and don't drink it - it's not for drinking!

Try Denatured Alcohol. You can get it by the gallon at any hardware store.

The stuff over 94% or so is generally pharmaceutical use in the wider
population and some people have and do drink it. I know the stuff we
get is ingestable for medical reasons. (considering what I think of
drunks it is amusing I have anything like that around). We get ours
from a pharmaceutical distributor same place we get acetone and
nitogen from. What I use in my shop is marked 99%, evaporates very
fast, leaves a white residue. I wouldn't soak rubber in it unless it
was specially compounded stuff, soaking rubber in the 70% is not great
either, there are less destructive ways to clean rollers although the
drying action will give you serious traction before it starts to break
down into powder.
