Saw the Moodies 2 Wednesdays ago

Saw the Moodies 2 Wednesdays ago

2011-06-05 by Sean

Finally have time to report.

Very enjoyable. They were at Visalia's Fox Theater, a mere 12 miles from my house. No way I was passing that up.

They had very good energy throughout their two sets, and they were musically spot on. It was quite a treat.

Took my fiance, my dad, and grandmother. (his mom.) Anne sat with me, my dad and grandma sat in the front row as she's wheelchair bound. She must have been clapping along as best as she could (with her partially paralyzed left arm from a nasty stroke) or something, as Justin and John kept waving at her specifically. After the first set was over the second drummer, Gordon Marshall went directly to her and handed her his drumsticks. We're going to have to build a display case for those.

They did play a mix of both their classic tunes and their Octave and beyond pop dreck. (I never could stand The Moody Blues the pop band, though they are far beyond most other pop bands.) I was obvious that John and Justin prefer that newer stuff much more, and there was more of it than their classics. It was also equally as obvious that Graeme prefers their classics, and he really came alive for those, particularly for Higher and Higher.

On a side note, John kept giving me (specifically) funny looks during NIWS. I guess he'd never seen anyone playing air-tron before.

On that note, I was very disappointed with their keyboardist (they've two of them) charged with playing the 'tron samples. He got all the right notes in the right time, but that was it. He played with an uncharacteristically bright sound, and apparently was unaware of the swell pedal at his feet. He played it as if it were another keyboard. I missed Pinder's presence. He weaved a tapestry of sound. This guy plays notes, very well may I add. Heck, on Peak Hour he substituted stock Yamaha synth church organ sound for both the Italian Accordion and Church Organ break in the middle. Why?? All this was bugging the shit out of my dad too. The remaining three original members need to get on this dude. They've got video footage. Mike is their friend. This guy needs to learn what Mike was trying to do with those sounds. There really is no excuse for this kind of laziness/apathy. Study up man.

Also, they were using a Memotron. After the show I asked a roadie why not the Pindertron samples (for chrissake those trons WERE on tour with THIS very band) , and the roadie acted as if I did not understand the Memotron is a Mellotron sampler. Hragh.

Their other three backing musicians were stellar. The flute lady had superior control of her instrument. (One professional flutist to another, she was very good.) The other keyboard player did not bother me in the slightest, though it was hard to see her from where I was sitting. Gordon Marshall was obviously enjoying drumming along with Graeme. They kept playing hot-potato with their drumsticks, laughing, and generally rocking out totally.

Again, a very enjoyable show. Would have been even better if their so called Mellotronist knew what the fuck he was doing. That was my only gripe. Any other band could get away with it, but not the Moodies. That IS their sound.

Yeah, you would think that it would be an HONOR to play those mellotron parts, and any decent musician would be able to copy the parts exactly with the right sounds (samples).

It kind of bugs us as we would all love that gig!

Very Interesting! Unaware of the swell pedal! gawd! I'm in a cover band in which i play mostly guitar. But I have a usb keyboard and a laptop and introduced the keyboard to the guys recently. Happily we will be playing nights in white satin and tuesday afternoon. I dont have a volume pedal for the usb keyboard but at least i can use the volume slider! As a side note.... what other tron sounds did Mike use on NIWS besides the MKII 3 violins? Cello?

He sometimes used a mixture of 3 Violins and Flute, plus Mixed Brass ("Just a Singer"), and sax... Plus a few others...

Sounds like 3 Violins under TONS of reverb...

Which is one of the reasons why King Crimson dropped the Moody's producer (Tony Clarke) from their first album....

Now, of you are listening to the album cut, the orchestra comes in during the final bridge... so that may be what you are hearing.

One thing to keep in mind about the "tronnist", Sean, is that he's not a Moody, he's a hired gun, and as so, is more than likely doing pretty much what Justin and John are telling him to. I could be wrong, but I don't think so.

Which is one of the reasons why King Crimson dropped the Moody's producer (Tony Clarke) from their first album....

Now, of you are listening to the album cut, the orchestra comes in during the final bridge... so that may be what you are hearing.

Once I went to see the Moodies when I was on LSD back in 1972 I think. I had this vision that Mike Pinder got sick and would be unable to continue and that I would go up and finish the show. I was ready... Thank God that didn't happen. I'm fairly confident that I would have hit one chord, lifted off from my seat, flown out over the audience, circled the room and flown out the door.

Wait a minute, Frank. I think that actually did happen. Mike said it was the damnedest thing he ever saw...and that they really wished you'd waited for Legend Of A Mind.

the Moodies made a big mistake when they hired Patrick instead of me....I know their material inside out.Of course they would've had to know I even existed which was the problem.

Yeah, you would think that it would be an HONOR to play those mellotron parts, and any decent musician would be able to copy the parts exactly with the right sounds (samples).

Would have been even better if their so called Mellotronist knew what the fuck he w as doing. That was my only gripe. Any other band could get away with it, but not the Moodies. That IS their sound.

-Sean

Seek out the single version of the song (stereo or mono). It has no real orchestration, and the MK2 Brass is much more foreward in the mix.

Yes, unless any of you specifically know better, Mike Pinder's Mellotrons were never sampled for that Pinder CD.
To my knowledge it's regular 400's and Pinder had little actual involvement other than as a yay / naysayer to the final edits.

I had some correspondence with Dave Kean about 10 years ago and he confirmed that Pinder wasn't really involved at all but gave it his "endorsement". i was under the impression, though, that a MkII ,M300,M400 and MI were all used and equipped with nice fresh tapes.

The Pinder MkII Violins don't sound anything like the MkII Violins sound on an M400. They seem to have a thinner sound.

In which case Moodies fans ought to be happy he is out of the band he he is clearly clinically deaf.

The Pinder MKII violins had a severe high freq cutoff that made them a lot "Mellower"... And they were drenched in reverb. Thats that I do when I play Moodies songs with my tron samples on my Motif XS.

I know that they worked long and hard on capturing decent sounds so it is possible that a MK II, 300 etc. were used. There should be some information included about how it was done in the product. I'm sure fresh tapes were used as well but then the question might become whether they made tapes from the original masters or the work masters or both.

It's almost indirectly analogous to whether Mellotrons of the past received tapes from Mellotronics (at "London pitch") or at the original Streetly pitch.

Mine ears say also the MkII church organ sound (never have known what its proper name is) and MkII brass.

When my band does it live I take MkII violins, singing, and flute. I make the other saxophonist (who is deathly afraid of performing on keyboards unfortunately) play the organ sound and violins when I'm playing flute. We skip the brass, it actually isn't all that necessary to the sound of the tune.

Actually, I think parts of the Pinder CD are Mellotronics. I noticed that the MkII violins on it are rather uniformly flat. Going to have to recompile the soundfont with a master adjustment. However, I don't really want to have a "tuned" set, just something in aggregate, centered on 440.

Pinder did use MkII Church Organ when playing NIWS live.

Hi all-
Bernie, I agree with you. Looking closely at the Isle of Wight video of NIWS, I could see the settings of Pinder's MK2. One keyboard is set for track C on station 6, which translates to the Church Organ on the MK2 leads list, and he clearly plays it (Of course, Pinder had 2 sets of leads loaded in his MK2, one for each side). On the other keyboard, a simple switch between 3 violins and MK2 brass was probably done. I think that the Church Organ sound created a nice mysterious background fill to the song. It may be in the studio version, but I don't know.
