I'm a tron freak, though I no longer own #917 : (

Well, the polite thing to do would be to introduce yourself and tell us all about yourself. We have a rather strict initiation process here. You should have also lied and told us you still owned a Mellotron. Sad to say, your not off to a very good start now, are you?

Well now, that's a bright start for the morning!
I'm in Massachusettes. I bought an M400sm from a guy in 1996 or 7. It was in great shape, however it was painted a faux walnut. 1st I removed all that, then I painted it Crimson Red. Then I removed that and painted it White. : )
This hurts very much to say; I had to sell it in order to buy a piece of crap car.....
This was in 2003..I think. I wasn't in a band at that time and it was not being played. Any way , I did manage to record an album with it. In 1998 I released "The Gathering of The Krums" by Pye Fyte. I will own another m400..............

Nope. I'm working on a dedicated facebook page and I do have some stuff up on myspace/trondoc. Other than that my regular facebook page under my name (Frank Stickle) has photo albums of several projects.
I also work on other stuff besides Mellotrons, although they are my specialty. I work on Chamberlins, Rhodes pianos, old Moog stuff and just about anything that comes in. Currently on the bench are the M400 the 4-track, an ARP Pro Soloist, a set of Taurus 1 pedals, a Hammond Solovox, an old Mood Satellite and a Roland 201 Space Echo. It isn't my day job.

Mark was a great guy.. We used to have 2 hour long phone calls that usually got political. (we were on the same side that way). I need to call his wife and see how they are...Thanks for the compliments. I have Sonar producer 8.5 and spend most of my time learning and relearning how to use it. So the creativity aint really flowing yet...
Did you know Mark from Buying music or maybe from progfest?

Clay,
Have we reached our limit of "Johns", or does the, "there's never a John around when you need one" clause still apply?

Title cut......PUT THE WEIGHT ON MY SHOULDERS....LIVING INSIDE MYSELF...most of the violins you hear on the whole album are Chamberlin (with maybe a couple of real violins doubling)

Re: [newmellotrongroup] Re: New Guy

2011-06-07 by Chris Dale

No real violins at all.

It's all Chamberlin played as an orchestra or string section would

In addition to the standard Chamberlin sounds Gino and Joe also booked their own sessions with school students and made their own tapes. I received those when I bought the Chamberlin from them.

I believe Markus has a few of those.

The Nightwalker album has got to be one of the last times the Chamberlin was used before the 90's resurgence. The actual instrument used on the record was one of the last Chamberlins made if not the last Chamberlin made (1980 or early 1981).
The last Chamberlins have sounds Harry withheld from the public.

Very Interesting Chris! I will be listening to the album today.
No surprise they made their own tapes as well!
Do you have pics posted here?
I met the two of them several years back. Joe is a nice guy. He was actually standing in the audience when I spoke with him. He had decided that the tour needed a more authentic Jazz pianist and they hired some other guy to do the tour.
Excellent musicians both Gino and Joe.

Re: [newmellotrongroup] Re: New Guy

Sorry no pics here or anywhere else online - I stupidly put them away in storage with the Chamberlin, parts, literature etc thinking I had a second set of them. It turned out the second set was of the other Chamberlin I have (they look almost identical except the Vannelli machine is wider). I photographed both machines separately in the exact same spot - not one of my most creative moments!

Yes, Joe is very nice, I went to visit him in LA, (though the visit was spent mostly working at his computer)

Never mentioned I'm co-author and drawer of a comic series. Trying to start back up and into the fictitious town I've inserted "Edward's Used Mellotron Emporium" which sells two models "the big one" and "the little one." Never seems to turn a profit either...

Someday, if the other co-author ever gets interest again, we'll continue, color them, and I'll post you guys a link.

John,
I met Mark through a fellow musician.Made a purchase from M&M and then
met him in person. He even came to a Tull tribute gig of mine.We talked
many times at Nearfest and he even was a distributor of a cd that I
participated on of various artists. He invited me to try out for the keys
replacement in Eccentric Orbit but my chops were not up to par.
A really nice man.

Hey John Mc,

Noticed you’re a Strat player and from back East. Ever had a chance to check out Ronnie Earl out of the Boston area? IMHO, the best Blues guitarist right now, but he rarely leaves MA to gig.

John

#911, but also a Blues fanatic.

I haven't checked him out though ive head his cds. I'm not a fan of blues. in fact i can only take it for about 17 minutes. But i do respect many blues players, and the style. It's just not for me. love my 62 reissue strat! made in 1990. and my les paul.

At last, someone who agrees with me. Blues is tedious in bulk as is reggae and anything else musically locked into a very narrow set of parameters..........IMHO.

Clapton is a very facile player that seems to have forgotten what excitement means, Martin.

I can appreciate blues and jazz when played live, but I can't take listening to recordings, unless it's big band jazz.

I liked Clapton's playing with Cream, but I think it's just another case of the whole being greater than the sum of its parts, like most bands from that era. Can't take any of his stuff after Cream, especially his inane lyrics.

Blues is limiting?

Is that why it has been around for about eighty years?

RE: [newmellotrongroup] Re: New Guy

HI Mike,

I meant limiting only in the context of playing just the I, IV, and V chords in 12 bars. Given those rules I think lots of room for expression, Skip James records for example.

This is bad topic for the Tron list.

Quite right Mike,

It is the foundation of most rock music and while it can be repetitive the art is in how it’s played and the individual

personality projected by the player. Yes, blues jams can be boring at times but I think there’s more there that meets

the eye (or ear). ….and I’m not just saying that because I am currently playing in a R&B band….. J (or am I ?)

Listen to David Gilmour or Jimi Hendrix…..I certainly hear the blue’s influence there…….

There were wonderful blues players, but sadly, most of them are in the past and the rest are soon going to be. Buddy Guy is a real standout for me. His influence on a generation of rock guitarists is legendary (but real).

Agreed Gary.
Mike, this is an example of of what I mean by being able to stretch out a bit. This is plain old Blues in E, but the phrasing and chord substitutions are pretty good.

HI Mike,

I meant limiting only in the context of playing just the I, IV, and V chords in 12 bars. Given those rules I think lots of room for expression, Skip James records for example.

This is bad topic for the Tron list.

I sometimes jam with some friends' blues band. It's a lot of fun, but I just can't listen to it recorded. Now sitting in a bar, sipping on a beer and listening to a blues band is whole other thing. Some music to me just has to be live.

It might be what blues you listen to. Never been a fan of Texas blues, though I respect it. Chicago blues makes me very happy, but not all the artists. Whatever Led Zeppelin was listening to I'll probably dig, and I'm backtracking that stuff. Want to find some good steel work.

You could knit me some new drum heads with it, Frank. Back in the mid '80s I used a kevlar head on my snare. You could literally cut holes in the head and it would have no negative effect on the sound...unless the stick went in the hole.

true dat! Wonderful idiom to play in. Harder to get "right" than it seems, and the skills are transferable to other genres. Actually, my background as a player is mostly from the RnB world, although my one and only album does not hint at that at all. What I'm good at writing is far different than what I'm good at playing. The joys of schizophrenia!

It's hard to tell, because he doesn't really show very important detail in his photos, but it looks like an old motor control card that you'd want to replace, and like the low noise mod hasn't been done on the power supply. The case looks to be physically sound, and don't worry, that pen scribble on the lid should come right off with some soap and water.

You might want to ask what the serial number is.

Hi-
Most of us will agree it dearly needs a new motor controller card, along with some electronic evaluations and mods like John suggested. The samples on Youtube sounded good, but a few pinch rollers obviously need adjustment. The tape frame has a good selection of very typical and usable 'Tron sounds. Probably a good deal, if the reserve price isn't too high. Examine it in person to be safe (if possible).
Wakeman saying "Good luck" was probably a bit of shaded sarcasm :)

The case looks to be physically sound, and don't worry, that pen scribble on the lid should come right off with some soap and water.

You might want to ask what the serial number is.

Hmmm. We have something in common Fritz. What I'm good at listening to I'm not good at playing.

true dat! Wonderful idiom to play in. Harder to get "right" than it seems, and the skills are transferable to other genres. Actually, my background as a player is mostly from the RnB world, although my one and only album does not hint at that at all. What I'm good at writing is far different than what I'm good at playing. Actually Fritz, that is how it was with me. Once I played with some blues guys I found I enjoyed it more than I thought I would.
Especially since I was (am) such a progressive rock geek………..

At last, someone who agrees with me. Blues is tedious in bulk as is reggae and anything else musically locked into a very narrow set of parameters..........IMHO.

And I find Clapton dull so there.

Speaking of thread titles, this is John #9 (or is it 10? I lost count J )

I have two observations – First this thread is becoming an email site all on its own. I’m getting lost trying to keep up with the asynchronicity of this group, entertaining as it is. Second, does anyone work? :-D

I used to manufacture escalator shoes for people who get nauseous wearing elevator shoes.

Speaking of thread titles, this is John #9 (or is it 10? I lost count J )

I have two observations – First this thread is becoming an email site all on its own. I’m getting lost trying to keep up with the asynchronicity of this group, entertaining as it is. Second, does anyone work? :-D

I once got my foot caught in an escalator. You'll be hearing from my lawyer.

Surely you'd get sued by the escalator manufacturer in the US of A.

Gotta job, but had an unexpected half day today.

I've been farm labor for six summers now. Not bad actually, rather enjoy it.

I'm starting work as a band director. Stepping in as long term sub at a local high school for a director who will be on maternity leave.

Thanks, but farm labor is not so bad when the boss is your best friend from HS. That labor did not put me through college, a hefty scholarship did. It did however purchase me a flute up to the task, and that was ALL I bought that particular summer, whew!
