Chamberlin sounds

2011-05-21 by tronbros

Mon Braves,

At last we have started releasing recordings from the original Chamberlin 600 master that Bill Fransen gave Les Bradley in 1962! This master is the actual one that the MKII violins were copied from. Mike Dickson has updated the Tape Library website, recorded demonstration pieces and added narrative in his own unique style. The clarity of the original recordings are breathtaking.

Best,

Martin

Of course that should read "the clarity of the original recordings IS breathtaking".

The violins sound wonderful but they are too good to my ears, personally prefer mark II 3 violins and the M300a violins with all their quirks. I suppose it depends on what you want to use them for. The mandolin voice sounds much more useable.

Would these sound a lot different played through a chamberlin? I would guess that they would.

Maybe different but not better. The M400 is capable of hifi quality if given good source material. It is not the muffled lofi beast everyone assumes. We have put excellent commercial recordings through them and they handle up to 16k, clear and precisely. Never underestimate the potential of a mellotron.

I would be interested to hear I direct comparison of the 3 violins played on an M400 and a Chamberlin, has anybody on the list got a working Chamberlin, did Mattias sort his out?

I can compare form an M1 and an M400 on the cello and 3 violins. I can't
say which I like better though... the M1 is brighter in both cases but the
M400 seems fuller. Two slightly different sounding instruments but each
with its purpose. The M1 sounds better to me with the tone control nearly
all the way up - the M400 I have the tone at less than half.

Mark, I can post note to note samples I made from the same amplifier and
recording sytems if you like.. It might be better if I actually played the
same musical passages on the two instuments but I am away from them for

Re: [newmellotrongroup] Re: Chamberlin sounds

2011-05-23 by Chris Dale

I concur with Thomas and Martin.
I have been able to cite these on my own different instruments (2 Chamberlins and 3 Mellotrons - a study in itself) and there is definitely a difference but whether it's better or not depends on what you want to use it for.
The Chamberlin was built to exactly replicate whatever was recorded on the tape. So, when you play a Chamberlin, you're going to hear a clear and bright sound and also very much the ambience of the room it was recorded in. They used Neumann U47's almost exclusively and Harry had built a special room for recording sounds. The sound - because of it's brightness - and placement of the mic, is easily mistaken for the real instrument in a mix. Unless you have a Chamberlin that you can hear those sounds from, you might not recognize the sound unless you play it like an organ - full chords.
This was by design. It was meant to play big band standards on. That idea is captured in the way the recordings play when you press a key.
The Mellotron can sound much lush and fuller in the mid range, and perhaps more distinctive because of the way the tapes were mixed down and also because there is slightly more wow and flutter in the Mellotron tape travel system. This is what adds to the beauty of the machine. There is a lot more going on with the Mellotron sound than the Chamberlin. The beauty of the Chamberlin is simplicity. The Mellotron is that same simplicity taken further into another realm perhaps.
To my ears the Chamberlin doesn't sound like a Mellotron and the Mellotron doesn't sound like a Chamberlin. Even Chamberlin recordings on Mellotron tapes don't sound like a Chamberlin at all to me. It's almost like the difference between MKII, M300 strings and the M400 strings. I would imagine that would be true if Mellotron sounds were put on to Chamberlin tape as well. I've found this is true of the Birotron and Optical disk keyboards as well.
All of them have their own sweet spot not captured by the others.
There's different sound sources and different octave ranges as well. The Chamberlin Cello is one octave higher than the Mellotron Cello for example.
It's also down to different pre-amp systems and slightly different physics involved when the tape mechanism plays.
Ahh, the beauty of mechanics!

Re: [newmellotrongroup] Re: Chamberlin sounds

2011-05-24 by Chris Dale

I did studio work for Sylvia Massy (the owner of this Chamberlin) many years ago.

I guess with most of them being located in the greater Los Angeles area, she didn't feel the need to keep it if she could rent one from somebody.

I don't think the Rhythmate will sell for anywhere near the $4500 listing price. There just isn't the demand for them like there is for M1 models.

I doubt this was the last M1 made (the pilot light is a much older style and the switches are not chrome) but should that actually be the case it's build year would be early 1981, and there might be some alternate or unreleased sounds in it.

It is also interesting that the last two Chamberlin M1's on eBay had sequential serial numbers (86103 and 86104).

A question about the Solo Female Voice: is it really 17 notes or 25 notes as on the Pinder CD? Maybe the highest 8 notes have been tuned up for the CD?

Re: [newmellotrongroup] Re: Chamberlin sounds

2011-05-25 by Chris Dale

I don't have access to my Chamberlins right now to check, but I know that the male voice does not go all the way up the keyboard and the female voice does not go all the way down.

They mix in the middle though which is quite nice.

Someone else with Male Voice on switch "A" and Female Voice on switch "B" would be able to help.

Tom are you there?

Re: [newmellotrongroup] Re: Chamberlin sounds

2011-05-25 by Chris Dale

I believe it's 25 notes
.

There's a great example of the Female voice on Bobby Goldsboro's "Honey" and a great example of the Male voice at the close of Marvin Gaye's "Mercy Mercy Me"

One of the best Chamberlin records is Neil Merryweather's "Space Rangers". There's many different sounds and it's used in a truly musical way too rather than just a useless gimmick (sorry Kanye)

The other one worth hearing is "Journey Through A Thousand Meditations" and "Indian Melodies" by Edmond S Bordeaux. I think they're still available for download.

These are great records because the Chamberlin really stands out and you can hear it as a main instrument instead of just a background accompaniment.

You are also guaranteed that the sound hasn't been f*****d with digitally because of when the records were made. It's the original sound as played from the original tape instrument.
You can listen for the motor drag and wow and flutter amounts here.

These records are both worth hearing if you want a further musical demonstration of the Chamberlin sounds available from Streetly or Mellotron.

After listening to those, you would be making truly informed decisions when you buy because you can hear how they compare to the sounds of the Mellotron. And you can see more why they are complements to each other.

They mix in the middle though which is quite nice.

Someone else with Male Voice on switch "A" and Female Voice on switch "B" would be able to help.

Tom are you there?

Hi all-
I just have to keep everyone entertained!
We know the Mellotron M400 had standard tape sets (flute, violins, 'cello). Did the Chamberlin have a standard set? If so, what were the sounds?

I did studio work for Sylvia Massy (the owner of this Chamberlin) many years ago.

I guess with most of them being located in the greater Los Angeles area, she didn't feel the need to keep it if she could rent one from somebody.

I don't think the Rhythmate will sell for anywhere near the $4500 listing price. There just isn't the demand for them like there is for M1 models.

I doubt this was the last M1 made (the pilot light is a much older style and the switches are not chrome) but should that actually be the case it's build year would be early 1981, and there might be some alternate or unreleased sounds in it.

Re: [newmellotrongroup] Re: Chamberlin sounds

2011-05-25 by Thomas C. Doncourt

My Female Voices have 25 notes...but the highest half octve or so doesn't
quite sound natural and the lowest notes sound like they have to shave
daily. The middle ground is beautiful though-just like the "Ambrosia
Singers"! The Male Voices on my original set were also 25 notes.

The male voice covers all 35 notes, the female only 17.

Ack! I meant 35 notes.....maybe Markus added a few tuned up and down to
the female Voice set but i don't think so.

There were four - here's the listing with Harry's notations on variations.

The female voice on M-Tron has very similar characteristics, I think M-tron was sampled off a Mark II but was originally a chamberlin sound, the upper and lower notes do sound weird, so I wonder if they have been tuned.

I think the M400 had different standard tape sets in Europe and the U.S. My M400 came with flute/violins/cello, but I think there was also another standard set.

The earlier standard set was Brass / Violins / Flute according to one of the brochures.

The earlier standard set was Brass / Violins / Flute according to one of the brochures.

What I can't remember is whether it would have been Mk2 brass or Mixed Brass B. I rather think it was the latter.

If every note of the Male Voice and Female voice plays for 35 notes they must have been tuned up and down for MTron then.
I know that she was a professional singer with a soprano range. In a Chamberlin the lowest and highest notes are natural and are never tuned, hence the blank tapes (or sound effects) at each end of the keyboard. Same with the Male voice.
You'll never get a Male or Female voice spanning all 35 keys unless it's new tapes that have been tuned or pitched up and down.
Richard said that Harry strictly refused to varispeed anything at all, and that every single note was an actual take.
Harry thought varispeeding was cheating and removed the authenticity. This was one of their 'selling points' during sales pitches.

Re: [newmellotrongroup] Re: Chamberlin sounds

2011-05-25 by Chris Dale

It would have been Mixed Brass B.
The MK II sounds were never available for the M400 until the 1990's
Tony Banks complained about Mixed Brass B being out of tune with the 3 violins so that it made playing Watcher Of The Skies difficult when mixing the two sounds with the track selector on the M400. On the MK II, the Brass and 3 violins were in tune.
That's one way you can tell the two sounds apart, as they sound close. The other is that MK II Brass sounds slightly more powerful than M400 Brass. There seems to be more punch in the bass range.
Of course, another variant here though is whether Banks got his tapes from Mellotronics Ltd. which ran their tape making machine at a slightly different speed, compared to Streetly which ran theirs at the original standard speed.
I think Mike Dickson or Martin mentioned it one time - 10 years ago now I think!!

The upper register of the Boys Choir is a bit squeeky, so replacing it with the Chamberlin Female Solo might make a nice split.

I can't really imagine using the Chamberlin Female Solo voice for anything serious. Harry must have punched her in the ovaries a few times to get her to make some of those nasty sounds.

The Swedish government gives every citizen a supply of them on the first of the year. Usually it's enough, but sometimes you can run out and have to apply for more, which apparently takes a long time and requires a lot of paperwork. It's a national disgrace, actually.

Actually, Bruce, Mellotrons were originally worktables. (Ask John Bradley)

One day someone at Streetly got bored and decided to put a keyboard underneath their worktable so he would be something to do when work got a bit slow. Suddenly Streely's management team (all Bradleys) realized the worker was on to Something Big. Taking the prototype down to the pub, they discovered it made a great bar table (room for lots of pints) AND it could be used for sing-a-longs like they used to have in Ye Olde Days. And viola! Mellotrons were born.

Mattias is just carrying this tradition on in a thoroughly Swedish fashion.

Are we getting prudish in our old age? I can't believe nobody has leapt on this one already (metaphorically speaking).

Ya know, something along the (rather obvious) line of: Maybe the *voice* doesn't, but I bet she does.

Or perhaps it's not a female voice at all but noises from some mysterious human sandwich involving Sarah Palin, Michael Bolton, Will Smith, Lady Gaga, and Justin Bieber (on the underside)

It would have been too easy, too expected, too scripted. The challenge would have been to bring something seminal to the discussion and frankly, with the impending holiday here in the New World and energies running low, no one wanted to embarrass themselves. That's why I left it alone. Fer chrissakes, even Mr Stickle passed and he was probably holding a full house. I am curious how wordsmith Blechta would have tackled this one....

if you put the female voice thru a very long sustained delay with long reverb and play legato style with volume pedal swells, you get a very ethereal sound (which works well in spacey angelic type music)

I always thought the Chamberlin females sounded like THE WIZARD OF OZ....those heavy vibrato 1930's style singers.
