The financial crisis

Re: [newmellotrongroup] The financial crisis

2011-04-26 by Bruce Daily

I thought it might get above $8000 or so. I wonder what this says about the economy? Of course, one Chamberlin M1 is like having 2 2/3rds M400s (in terms of voices). Was there a bidding war between just a few bidders at the last minute?
I hope it found a good home.

Considering that three years ago a beautiful Mark II went for 12000, I would say that this buyer may have overpaid.

The overarching problem with eBay is that it is pretty easy to be entirely dishonest. Not that long ago a guy with a Hammond X to sell made up the 'going rate' for it by staging four other 'auctions' for a similar product and having the price go through the ceiling, thereby setting what appeared to be the market price. People don't really research what they see on eBay - they tend to pay what they can afford and never consider the possibility that the seller is really a con man. I know eBay have some forms of protection and detection against this thing happening (as well as ghost bidding, etc) but they cannot really hope to be effective over all possibilities.

We've seen several cases of Mellotrons for sale over the last few years where it is pretty obvious to anyone that it's a fake sale. Maybe there are people out there who are bonkers over Chamberlins, but really - if this sale is genuine then it's way over the odds for the article, let alone an article you are effectively buying sight unseen from someone you are perhaps unlikely to meet.

Frank has a new M4000 that cost less than the Chamberlin went for. I have to wonder if he's sorry he didn't save his money to bid on the Chamberlin. It would have cost only him a couple of grand more than his M4000.

Re: [newmellotrongroup] Re: The financial crisis

2011-04-27 by Chris Dale

I think this has to do with our beloved instruments becoming more accepted and absorbed into awareness by the pop culture.
These things are becoming less underground and more commercialized - too bad because something gets lost when that happens.
It somehow becomes trivialized, and reduced.
There has been more info than ever before on these instruments because of the internet. There's also the two Mellotron books, Dianna's movie, real thing vs lacklustre samples debate in music forums, general curiosity, mechanical engineering, music history etc.etc. etc. that make having the real thing for some people more desireable.
There's also the rarity factor - being able to buy something that might not appear again. Mellotrons are being made again, but not Chamberlins. I never believed the $35,000 Birotron story until the seller privately confirmed it to me.
There's also the condition of an instrument which will influence someone's buying decision.
I kind of see this happening as a natural course of events although I thought it would happen much slower than it is. We've seen Mellotrons' gradually going for higher and higher and more frequently, so it stands to reason that the related keyboards like the Chamberlin and Orchestron, when they do pop up will probably jump higher in ratio as well.
It truly is another era now than when most of us got into this 15, 20, or 30 years ago.

I don't see the Chamberlin as an alternative or replacement for a Mellotron. They are subtly different (as we all know)... an M4000 is an amazing machine, probably the greatest tool for a real mellotronist yet devised. Plus--buying a Chamberlin doesn't keep Harry or Richard going whereas patronage to Streetly keeps a living source for parts and technology for these machines alive. I have devised a giant piggy bank ( house sized) in which I am saving for the M5000 which will live in peace and harmony alongside the M1 and M400.

I just go to PA thrift shops and antique outlets. I just purchased a fully functioning hammond t-111 for $40 to go along with the Leslie145 I got off the street for free! Yeah, I know, it's only a T-111, but it is a tonewheel hammond and Goff Pro in CT is gonna hook me up with some upgrades

Good point Mike. Years ago, when I bought the Blue Mellotron on eBay, one guy kept pushing the bid. Although I prevailed, when I got to Connecticut and saw the machine I found that the seller had totally misrepresented the machine. I ended up getting him to lower the price substantially. Then I found out that the other bidder was a friend of his and had been running the bid up. When I was done with him I ended up getting the Tron for $400.00. It wasn't worth any more than that. I ended up learning a valuable lesson. I won't buy Mellotrons on eBay anymore and I do far more homework on any high ticket item I buy there. I no longer will list Mellotrons for sale on eBay either.

Frank has a new M4000 that cost less than the Chamberlin went for. I have to wonder if he's sorry he didn't save his money to bid on the Chamberlin. It would have cost only him a couple of grand more than his M4000.

Good choice. Goff Pro is the very best. They're about 2 miles from my house. Stop by if you're in the neighborhood.

I got a 1960 one owner Hammond A-100 and a Leslie 22H for free from a friend last year. It was bought new by his dad. Both are in excellent condition.

My Hammond T400 was a freebie. Just had to haul it away from the original owner. Spent $100 to have the vibrato fixed, but worth it. The “T”s have a lot of solid state components, but a nice little two speed built in Leslie is inside.

Yes, I knew it was bad syntax. I was too lazy to correct it. Thanks for the help though.
