Mark V owners

Mark V owners

2008-01-05 by jaybe52000

I realized I'd never asked on the old list or this one how many members own a Mark V like
myself?

I know Professor Korb brought Pat Moraz' modified Mark V "Novatron" back to life, and I've
seen pics of the studio in Japan that has a Mark V with a Birotron sitting on top.

I know from our friend Ken Leonard that Pierre Veilleux also owned a Mark V at one point in
time but he no longer has it if I recall correctly.

Allen Duffy owns a MK V. It is a Novatron. (He says that it was
Oscar Peterson's). Jon Salley has the Pat Moraz Novatron MK V. Mark
Glinsky had Pinder's Novatron MK V and sold it to a collector in Italy.

There were about 31 MK V's built. 28(?) were Mellotrons and 3 of them
were Novatrons. Looks like all 3 Novatron MK V's are accounted for.

Re: Mark V owners

Thanks for the feedback guys.

Wow! I can't believe I'd never heard of the eboardmuseum!!

And I thought I had a ton of synths and keyboards...heh

The pic of the Mark V at the eboardmuseum is black. I wonder if they or Froese "repainted"
or "re-Tolexed" back to it's original color. I remember seeing it in a Tangerine Dream
video and/or pics and it was painted white at one point in time if I recall.

My Mark V is a "Mellotron" Mark V. Complete with a Mellotronics metal model and serial
number plate on the back.
Ironically, it's got the knobs that were later found on M400's by (gasp) Sound Sales, the
grey metal knobs with the gold/yellowish centers.
Thankfully that's the only thing about it that has been messed with by Sound Sales..... ;-)

Does anyone know if these later knobs found on the M400's with the black plastic control
panel overlay/sticker and yellow "M" logo were shipped that way from England because the
original black plastic and silver knobs were out of stock/unavailable etc., or was this
something that Sound Sales did for some reason to make the US Mellotrons look
"different" than the UK models. I've always assumed Sound Sales did the knob change and
the control panel graphics.

The only other equipment I've seen with these knobs (other than M400's) are API mixing
consoles and their current rack mount products which use a really small version of these
metal knobs.

The huge road case for my Mark V has two of the very large yellow "M" logo stickers on it
so I'm guessing that my Mark V passed thru their scary hands at some point.

Hi John,
I recall Frank Stickle posting something on the old list (how's that old
list doing, I wonder) about the black control panels on the sound sales
M400s being stickers and you mention it also. #1407 has one of these
black with the yellow M but it doesn't seem like a sticker. It does
have a rather healthy scratch along the front edge and raw aluminum is
definitely showing through. I'd love to restore it to the Streetly
control panel if that is indeed under there. Does anyone have any info
on that?

You should be able to remove it. I believe I used acetone. It did not mess up the face plate underneath.

Start the year off right. Easy ways to stay in shape in the new year.

Nice! Thanks Mattias.

I also saw something that stated that Eddie Jobson played a Mark V with Roxy Music that
also had some sound effects in it... Footsteps and car starting at the beginning of "Love is
the Drug" and the string part from "Really Good Time" which apparently was spread over
several keys played one after the other to get the string parts for that song. I think that's
still available the library.
This same article stated that Paul McCartney had/has s/n 109 (I remember seeing that one
in some Wings videos with Linda sitting at it with a Minimoog and ARP Pro Soloist on top)
and that Rick Wakeman and Tony Banks both had Mark V's as well.

I know about Rick's home made "Mark V" that Chris now has and I didn't know that Tony
Banks or Genesis ever had a Mark V, anyone know if that's true?

Re: [newmellotrongroup] Re: Mark V owners

2008-01-06 by Mattias

Weird coincidence...

I listened to the Roxy Music strings last night at Markuss while choosing new sounds and I even added a Brian Eno sound effect on to one of my new frames...

The Roxy Music set had loads of strings (most probably all from the same songs)...some synth stuff and then short vocal phrases. Not being a big Roxy Music fan I can't say from which songs...

We also listened to the Yes live Moraz tapes which is interesting and kind of sad. Fast organ runs et.c

Always interesting though...

Mattias,

interesting stuff (wondering that nobody is asking, so I will): can you describe what
exactly is on that Moraz live tapes for Yes? Perhaps if you are not a big Yes fan, you don't
know where they used the bits, anyway, I would like to find out for what parts Patrick
Moraz has used the mellotron as a playback gear :-) I have this 1975 London concert
video ( I guess the only video with Moraz during Yes) but never recognized any third hand
keyboard lines out of the blue, but maybe the camera didn't recorded him in that moment.

Markus = Markus Resch? Does he own all the original recordings made for Mellotrons?

Greetings, Thomas

Hey hey.

Thanks for asking...I was sort of surpised noone was interested...The stuff on the Moraz tapes was a bunch of fast runs on a church organ, some big vocal arrangements and chords. There were some rhythmic stuff as well more in a atmospheric vein...Reverby random hits.

We also listened to the Black sabbath tapes and as mentioned the roxy music ones...

Markus has all of the Mellotron sounds as well Chamberlin sounds from first generation tapes. He did a full run through checking all the mastertapes in 2006, exactly 50 years after they were first recorded, choosing the best takes et.c as well as finding older generations and better copies of the sounds. Very interesting hearing the Chamberlin 3 violins in comparison to the MK II ones.

He has also a bunch of unused rhythm and fills for the MK II and loads of very very esoteric sounds. He has also sounds for a sort of mini Mellotron that apprently never happened.

For my new tapes I got the ...

#1 Chamberlin Flute, Chamberlin bass clarinet, Twist in C (from the MK II), Slow waltz (MK II),

#2 Chamberlin Gino Vanelli double bass and celloes, Tubular Bells, Electric guitar chords, Bolero (MK II)

Not necessarily your average second frame selections but I know I will be using them.

To quote Beck...Somethings gonna change...I can feel it.

Mattias,

interesting stuff (wondering that nobody is asking, so I will): can you describe what
exactly is on that Moraz live tapes for Yes? Perhaps if you are not a big Yes fan, you don't
know where they used the bits, anyway, I would like to find out for what parts Patrick

I think it was on the David Kean produced Mellotron "The Sounds/ The Workings" VHS tapes there's footage of both Kean and Moraz playing some of the sounds on this frame. There are several pipe organ riffs from Chris Squire's solo album that Moraz contributed to as well as some of the odd synth noises from Moraz first couple solo albums.
