Has anyone heard if Markus is shipping his new digital machine yet? Or heard any feedback about it? (I have seen all the Youtube footage)

Not much news since NAMM. May be production problems?

He told me by email he was intending to ship in July,
but I couldn't afford one ...
I notice there's been no further update their webpage, but that means little going by the state of the rest of mellotron.com (Pinder CD Vol2, "aiming for a summer release" - er, is that summer 2007 or 2008, guys?)
There was a review of the Manniken tron 1U module in Sound on Sound last month which neglected any mention of the M4000D - since it was written by synth-pedant extrordinaire Gordon Reid, I did wonder why he omitted mention of it...

I received an email from Marcus recently and he advised that preorders for the digital Mellotron will ship in December. The delay has been due to lengthy backorders on critical parts.

The original question poster cared, hence his asking the question.
Now am I going to have to be extremely sarcastic to you? Cos you won't like it...

Look who's the smarty Artie. I didn't get farther than a masters. Ran out of money. I wanted the Ph.D but since I had to pay my way I accidentally got a job that paid a lot of money and ended up married and with a kid.
Now the kid is grown and I'm out of work. Hmmm.

I'm all over the map - B.A. Communications, TESL certification, and just short of my MCSA. I've also studied business, electronics, design, architecture, and law but my most enjoyable musical and financial accomplishments came from outside of school so I never finished a few things.

And yes, I agree - it's never too late!

Ok - time to say my bit. And this is me, not JB. We are mature individuals in theory but the Swede unit, despite all the protestations, has held onto the vaguely missleading M4000D logo. It's laughable really but I cannot escape being annoyed at the mindless mindset that trys to instigate consumer confusion by using a similar name yet riles at Memotron infringing almost everything including the fridge and underpants(leaving a witty personality unscathed). The truth is that NO ONE ELSE but he should be engaged in anything mellotronic. But that is never going to be the case because we are here for duration and no slight of hand or clumsy marketing device is going to alter our course.

Best,

Does anyone on this list seriously think that somebody who is investing that much money in a keyboard is going to be confused

as to which keyboard they are buying? I think it is just good marketing and I don’t think anyone will buy a M4000D in error when

they meant to buy a M4000……or visa versa……eh?

Cheers,

Gary

Best,

M

Can't we all just get along ? I think a quick look at world history or even the mellotron lists, would suggest the answer is no.

I can't think that anybody would confuse a mellotron with a rompler that has a strange keyboard.

Is anybody on the list thinking of buying an M4000D? I would be surprised.

I can understand why somebody would buy an M4000 but not the M4000D why not just by the mellotron CD? Is Marcus still selling the Mellotron CD? I wouldn't if it was my business.

I suppose if you are going to tour and you need that "look," and all those sounds, the Digital machine would make sense. 200 Mellotron and Chamberlin sounds in one box is attractive. I think that alone is the big attraction. But once you have all of those sounds, Markus has nothing left to sell you.

Re: M4000 D

2010-11-30 by Charles

The CD sample rate is lower. (I have it on my Emu E4K and it sounds great) Why buy an M4000D? Why buy a Memotron? For immediate access in a live rig to a dedicated instrument doing a retro job. Why buy a digital Hammond? Digital piano? Convenience.
I see the M4000D (and Memotron) as the next logical step of evolution of the Mellotron. Why is everyone so hung up on PLAYING BACK STRIPS OF TAPE? Yes it's cool..yes it was the starting point....but are people obsessing over the method and forgetting the reason for the sounds? The video demo of Markus' unit sounds great to me. I want one. I had an M400 for 25 years but have no desire to go back to that technology for moving around to live gigs. Loading tron banks into the E4K in a live show takes time (even if you have a bunch of sounds per bank)and the digital units provide immediate changes.

Re: M4000 D

Maybe Markus is getting tired of building MKVI's or is running out of parts & tapes. Face it, it won't go on forever. The M4000D preserves the sound for posterity.
BTW- I love the look & sound of Streetly's unit and have nothing against it at all, but I would never have one and move it around to live gigs.

Exactly - I have the Pindertron CD-ROM -
it takes about 7 minutes to load it all up into the RAM off the hard drive on my Akai MPC4000 and many boring hours programming the thing to make the sounds play in the right song. It's a pain in the ass.
If I had the cash I'd love a dedicated mellotron keyboard to use at gigs which I can just switch on and it'll always have the right sounds louded at the flick of a switch.

I have no idea why Martin & JB thing we'd confuse the M4000 and the M4000D, we're not eejits!

I had an M400 for 25 years but have no desire to go back to that technology for moving around to live gigs. Loading tron banks into the E4K in a live show takes time (even if you have a bunch of sounds per bank)and the digital units provide immediate changes.

I can see why Streetly is annoyed, and I don't really understand what advantage was gained by using that name. That being said...I think the M4000D is a very attractive machine- a wooden keyboard! I actually like the feel of a real mellotron and would be more comfortable playing something that approximated it and even resembled it . If I was going to do a small tour I would get one. I would certainly not use it in the studio though or consider it a replacement for a tape based unit. I doubt the m4000D will be a big seller , there are only a few eccentrics that would create a niche- I hope it doesn't pull Markus under.

I played the M4000D prototype at NAMM and loved it. If I had the opportunity to play Streetly's machine I would probably love it too.

But let's face it, these are two different machines for two different purposes. Both are worthy instruments.

I agree that 200 sounds is nice, but I suspect when you gig, 5 or 6 sounds are used 95% of the time. As for what else Markus could sell, flight cases and gig bags are where the gross margin is.

I suppose if you are going to tour and you need that "look," and all those sounds, the Digital machine would make sense. 200 Mellotron and Chamberlin sounds in one box is attractive. I think that alone is the big attraction. But once you have all of those sounds, Markus has nothing left to sell you.

Perhaps, but anyone can sell flight cases and gig bags for the digital machine.

Logically it should have been called a MK8 or something else....I understand Streetly's annoyance at the name.

I was just saying for ME that spending that kind of coin on such a nice machine would make me keep it at home in a studio environment. No offense meant at all,Martin. More power to Jonsi if he's happy doing that.

Charles,

I am rarely offended. I am also rarely vociferous these days about anything or anyone on this list. Just sometimes I get infuriated!

I would have no hesitation in taking mine to any live gig except that I refuse to let it get scratched and dented. If others wish to play or record it, they come to me.

That's the price listed on Big City Music site...Markus had told me 1800 dollars before so maybe the price went up or is more thru the distributor?

Tom,

Marcus will probably sell more of the “Ds” than the tape units. At under $2k there will probably be a bigger market than the small “niche”

market of the tape based Mellotrons. I would be more worried about the tape units pulling him under. As to the “few eccentrics” they are all here

The truth is that NO ONE ELSE but he should be engaged in anything mellotronic. But that is never going to be the case because we are here for duration and no slight of hand or clumsy marketing device is going to alter our course.

RE: [newmellotrongroup] Re: M4000 D

2010-12-01 by Mark Wallis

There's a place for all these instruments, naturally. Once upon a time there was only one way to get Mellotron sounds. Now you can have them for the price of a couple of beers in downloaded form. So now they're everywhere. On your phone.. in your Strawberry Fields musical Beatlemas card..(maybe)

..but so are cars, yet people still build, restore and (presumably in quantities sufficient for survival) buy TVRs..

Markus's new instrument looks great, and anything done with love deserves to do well. My personal view is that calling it the M4000D certainly implies a 'product-range relationship' (for want of a less corporate-sounding term) with Streetly's M4000 and should have had a different designation. They aren't really competing products, people that really want a tape-replay instrument will buy them old and new, Memotrons seem to be doing OK and presumably Markus will sell a decent number of M4000Ds. I imagine that there'll be some sales clash between the last two.. which will be sad because someone has to lose out somewhere. But then.. Moog are doing OK, and Nord, and everybody else with any profile in the synth-making game.. so hopefully everybody gets their slice of the cake for a while yet.

If your band depends on Mellotrons but you really can't take it on the plane for whatever reason.. you'll want the next best thing. And if you're used to Mellotrons- the physical instrument- you'll want something that your fingers think IS one, rather than some sounds on a different keyboard.
so that's where the Memotron and M4000D come in.

so what does the word 'Mellotron' define?

Is it an electro-mechanical keyboard-controlled hand-crafted beautifully engineered multiple tape-replay instrument?
A set of sampled sounds identified by that name to musicians irrespective of the source of the sound?
A brand, a trademark?

All these things. Just as long as everybody knows what's what, as it were..

Love and Scones,

msw. Currently Very Very Cold Indeed!

Re: M4000 D

I got to wondering about any potential "tech issues" which might develop down the road with the digital unit. Since these are small run, hand made instruments and the only support is in Sweden, what happens in case of malfunctions...or what exactly COULD go wrong with these and how easily are they fixed by local repair places? What's the breakdown rate on Memotrons? (has anyone heard?) It's not like tape replay where you can change a single broken tape or blown capacitor. I imagine the whole thing is on a motherboard but what issues could potentially develop? How long will the ROM last? etc. etc. If I got one it's not
like I would want to ship it back and forth from Ohio to Sweden for repairs. I assume all parts are easily replaced locally (except the sounds).

Hi Charles,
Good point. I saw the display on the M4000D and wondered how robust the unit will be. I have a Roland Juno G where the LCD display has gone out twice, after warranty of course. About $200 to have repaired each time.

I magine the whole thing is on a motherboard but what issues could potentially develop? How long will the ROM last? etc. etc. If I got one it's not like I would want to ship it back and forth from Ohio to Sweden for repairs. I assume all parts are easily replaced locally (except the sounds).

Hi all-
Yeah, I wonder who developed the circuits for the M4000-D? I can't picture Markus engineering it entirely in-house. Could it be a re-packaged trimmed-down Nord Wave?

Don't think it has any relation to the "wave"- that has some sort of weird compression and the M4000D has none.

I really don’t think you want to compare breakdowns and local repair availability to the tape machines. Most digital

keyboards are extremely reliable and unless Marcus is using custom LSI chips the unit could probably be repaired by

any good tech especially if Marcus makes service documentation available. This is one of the main reasons almost every

“Mellotron” band has gone digital long ago….even the big ones where cost is not a factor. Of course time will tell as to

the reliability of the 4000D…….

The price (ca. USD $1000) was within an e-mail from Markus. Production delays occurred and last I heard (summer) he aimed for a December release of the rackmount. Same sounds as the wooden one.

Yes.
I have a need for a machine to take to the studio for the new album. The Memotron I had didn't have the quality I was looking for.

I hadn't seen this before, I think I can just tell the difference between the M4000D and the Mark VI. I don't suppose anybody on the list has been tempted?

'a working version'... bloody hell.. I know this is old hat but there's no need for that really. As with the bit about having the only genuine masters. Can't We All Just Get Along? etc...

I am sure that Markus is a skilled technician. As a spokesperson, he can be irritating. When promoting a product, it's never a good idea to slag another product. It's in the Marketing 101 course, right after the section about coming up with a unique name for your product. (Bwaahhaaahaaa!)

Wow! I could hear the difference immediately! The MKVI sounds clearly superior. I think Marcus sounds a bit arrogant in his preamble. Notice his eyes shifting when he makes his ludicrous statements?

I never new that the MkVI is a "working version" of an M400. Very interesting.

In a live or studio mix you would never hear the difference especially after the reverb and

other processing that is commonly used on Mellotron tracks. It will almost certainly out

sell the tape machines but most on this list will hate it no matter what it sounds like.

OK. But how does it really sound?
Well, if we are comparing a well engineered and adjusted M400 (which I'm lucky enough to own thanks to John and Martin) with Markus' digital equivalent, guess what? the tape based machine wins, no question in my book. The overall sound of the 400 has far more "grunt" than its digital cousin.
BUT. I love my m400 so much I don't want to have to move it... ever! (that is until I eventually move house, whenever that will be). Even if I wanted to move it now, I can't ,due to where it is and the fact I would be trying to shift it on my own, with my dodgy back and all!
The fact is, and it's no use denying it. Markus has done a terrific job of building his creation. The attention to detail and sheer quality of the workmanship is of a very high standard.
OK, so people say why not just use computer software to create the sound? After all that's surely what the instrument is anyway. True, but I think our love affair with the tron has always be more than just the "sound". Like me, I bet most of us here would go down to the front of the stage at concerts just to see what this curious white box was. I have to say I'm blown away with the look of the Digital Mellotron (or whatever label you want to give it).
Also, it gives me instant access to 100 Mellotron M1/Mk2/300/400/Chamberlain sounds. Any 2 can be stored together and mixed accordingly. I can have one sound either side of the stereo mix. I can move the attack of the start of the sound backwards and forwards in relation to the "virtual" head. I can control how fast the "tape" returns, so if you take your finger off while holding a chord, if you put it straight back on again the note starts midway along the "tape" instead of going back to the beginning. And of course the samples are full bandwidth 24 bit uncompressed, unlike the Memotron which was very compressed to these ears. No looping by the way!
I was lucky enough to sell my Memotron just in time to transfer what I received for that accross to Markus who wanted payment in full straight away. Thankfully, he honoured the original price, rather than coming back to me for more cash as the price has gone up recently. Needless to say I've had to wait a very long time for him to develop the 100 sounds, which IMO was well worth the wait.
In an ideal world, I would have had the space and the cash to buy an M4000 from John and Martin, but I would still have had the transportation problem.
The only issues I have with Markus, are mainly concerned with the name. Even when I ordered it and discussed the order with him, I always referred to it as a Digital Mellotron, even here I refuse to call it an M4000D or whatever it's called.
I struggled long and hard over whether the decision to buy it was the right one, just in case I upset anyone on this list. But I'm pleased I bought it. It fulfils a specific requirement I have.
What I have for the (at the time) reasonable price I paid was very good value, and if anyone has a problem with that, they should get over it!
I still love my 400 to bits. I just want to keep it that way.
Thanks for listening.

I won't. It's the best of the lot. I'd love to have one just to have. It's not a Mellotron, but it has cool sounds in it, and lots of them. It has Mellotron sounds and Chamberlin sounds. It had friendly software and it does cool stuff. It isn't a Mellotron but it does as good an imitation of one as you're likely to find anywhere.
If you have both you're all the better for it. I was thinking of buying one and sometime soon I might. I am fortunate because I have a real M4000 Mellotron and I love playing it and having others play and record it. I also have acquired a real Chamberlin M1.

Here's my volley back..

Rarely do I use ANY processing on my tron with the exception of EQ and compression, so I am uncommon that way. No verb, no delay etc. Once I rebuild my 122 I'll dump it through that and the nice hot output of the tron will overdrive the Leslie nicely.

Hate is such an ugly word. It may sound very near to a tron, but it most certainly will not feel like one...ever. For me, part of the process of making music is the process of playing music. Playing, playing, playing!!!

In a live or studio mix you would never hear the difference especially after the reverb and
other processing that is commonly used on Mellotron tracks. It will almost certainly out
sell the tape machines but most on this list will hate it no matter what it sounds like.

The last time I recorded with a Mellotron (70’s) it sounded fine. Back then they were borrowed or rented since

(to address your jab J) I don’t own one. Now that may not allow me to have an opinion on this group but

I have recorded groups with Mellotron and samples and I spent copious amounts of time listening to Genesis,

King Crimson, etc. recorded and live…..and I did stay at a Holiday Inn last night! (US commercial for those abroad).

Seriously , I have run them through guitar amps, reverb, and whatever to get the sound I wanted like the albums

I listened to. Sorry if my ears aren’t as Mellotron astute as some here but I wasn’t trying to put down the tape machines

in any way….I think you know that…..actually I was expecting that response from Frank! J

Gary... Always remember the two requirements to be in this group. Thin skull & thick skin. You may mess with me to your hearts content. I can dish it out and I can take it. Mel, on the other hand, is thick skulled and thin skinned and he sometimes reads my email. He's also often drunk and somewhat stupid. So if he comes after you, don't take it hard. All he can do is make a lot of noise.

I fully admit to all manner of processing, just to make the sound a bit more interesting. On some of the more adventurous works I had a hand in (like 'Mars' or the Tallis Fantasia) there were 60+ Mellotron tracks used with maybe 20 of them being used at once on occasion. For that reason I really had to look into using Adobe Audition for noise reduction.

Just for laughs I once knocked up all the faders recorded the sound of 60 or so inactive Mellotrons at the same time. Pretty noisy.

I signed up early on with a serial number of 43.
I know he has had production issues, particularly as the voice count was about six when I first contacted him. Then he said he wanted to go to 100, but was facing delays with the software. In all fairness he did give me the option of having one with the low voice count, but I felt it was going to be worth the wait to get the full set of 100. I didn't want to get into having to getting it upgraded.
Hang on in there, it will be well worth the wait.

The fact that they are 24 bit samples probably explains the delay in getting the full 100 voices. My guess is that he didn't have all of the tape library voices sampled at 24 bit. The digital mellotron samples that Markus has supplied up until now have been 16 bit. (Pinder CD rom). You might think it's easy to convert 16 bit to 24 bit, but Markus may have resampled everything one note at a time. Does anyone know ?

No need to convert one note at a time unless you're trying to avoid interacting with your spouse. Tons of good quality batch converters out there.

Gary, I haven't worked that one out yet! The instructions dont give any info on the cartridge slot on the back. I know there are plans for Markus to provide extra voices on a cartridge at some stage, but as I wont be requiring that feature, you should maybe email him for an answer.
Still sounding great, though the sound is somewhat smoother in nature compared to it's tape based master. I have no urge to ditch my m400, which i'm relieved about as I feared I might!

But does batch-converting 16 bit to 24 bit improve the sound? I would think that resampling would be necessary. Also the Pinder samples were sampled at 22,050 Hz. There's lots of room for improvement there.

It's surprising that it's that low - I worked in television for about 20 years and we were doing most of our audio at 44 K.

Most commercial sample sets are 44 K.

There'd be no point batch-converting existing 16 bit samples to 24 bit, you wouldn't be adding anything other than an extra string of zeros to the end.

Likewise there'd be no point upsampling the 22kHz stuff to anything higher, you'd just add a couple of extra octaves of perfect silence on top of everything.

I believe that when they did they original sampling, they did a little investigating and came to the conclusion that the bandwidth of the original tape recordings didn't merit a higher sampling rate (i.e there was basically nothing on the mellotron master tapes higher than 11 kHz. To be honest I find this a little hard to believe, but that's what they said...indeed the blurb about it may still be on www.mellotron.com for all the world to read...)

He would have to resample each note to gain the benefit of true 24bit rez. Otherwise, it's just a dither down to 16bit. If the entire system is at 24bit, any onboard effects will sound nicer at 24bit, but it all depends on so much more than just bit rate. I still hear tracks done at 16/48 that blow away 24/96 or 24/192. Not sure it's worth a complete redo. I still work in 16/48.

I missed the sampling rate on first read. 22.05 Fs is unacceptable. I'd rather sample at a lower bit rate than sacrifice sampling frequency. Remember the old Roland samplers? They were only 12bit ...don't know if they ever went to 16, but they sounded great...it's all about the oversampling filters.

Well…the last three days I’ve been back and forth between the carnage and Richmond and the disaster Williamsburg Virginia….

We had a few sticks in the yard.

A LOT of sticks.

Not much head room in the “remodeled” F150.

Thanks for posting the pics Andy. Do all 100 voices have the low F and F# ? Do some of them sound pitch shifted? I wouldn't think that he would have recordings of those notes for all 100 voices.

The two additional notes may not seem like a big deal, but when you need them, you need them. Sometimes the middle F just will not do it!

Clay.
All 100 voices seem to have the extra 2 notes. If there is any pitch shifting going on it's been well implemented. Markus did say that some had the extra notes recorded but never used till now. But I would guess some but not all.
Interesting that m300 strings A and B are available as 2 separate voices, lower register and higher, so you get everything!

In, say, 1986 I would have never predicted that there would be two

Thanks for posting the pics Andy. Do all 100 voices have the low F and F# ? Do some of them sound pitch shifted? I wouldn't think that he would have recordings of those notes for all 100 voices.

The two additional notes may not seem like a big deal, but when you need them, you need them. Sometimes the middle F just will not do it!
