I've heard that if you leave the tape frames out overnight along with a plate of pickled onions, jellied eels and a couple of pints of beer, the mellotron elves will break into your house, eat all the food, drink all the beer, and if you're lucky, really lucky, the re-lace the tape frames for you.
Of course, I heard that story from John Bradley...
