In fairness to Markus's M4000D, whilst the digital samples inside are from the raw master tapes, the signal then goes through an additional DSP stage, which on the current firmware lets you chose 'M400' or 'Chamberlin M1' preamp emulation, so you have some flexibility in tonal quality there (obviously this does not add additional wow and flutter and tape compression, though)
