if you put the female voice thru a very long sustained delay with long reverb and play legato style with volume pedal swells, you get a very ethereal sound (which works well in spacey angelic type music) 

I always thought the Chamberlin females sounded like THE WIZARD OF OZ....those heavy vibrato 1930's style singers.
