As others have said, this isn't the standard in the US which is UP = ON. It 
may just be due to living here all my life, but the US standard does seem 
more intuitive in the direction of the switch goes towards the (ceiling) 
light source -- and kind of a binary mnemonic UP = 1. 

Now, if only the US could learn to pronounce my middle name.
