[motm] Paint can maybe replace Tolex

[motm] Paint can maybe replace Tolex

2001-01-10 by elhardt@aol.com

I was roaming around Lowes (Home Depot clone) and noticed some interesting
paints that could possibly be used inplace of Tolex on cases. I picked up a
can of spraypaint made by Krylon that is called "Make It Stone". It's made
to give any object a stone or granite look and it has a thick bumpy tolex
type texture. I sprayed a little pine with it, let it dry and it looks very
promissing (once black is sprayed over it). It comes with a small can of
protector spray for about $10. Not to be confused with Krylon's $8, one can
stone spray, which looks more like grain sized sand mixed with paint and
doesn't have nearly the thickness of texture or style of their $10 product.

Also I saw some kind of textured paint or covering in large plastic
housepaint sized cans that are meant to be applied with a roller. I'm
tempted to check that stuff out too.

From experience...

Be careful with the textured paint. It tends to crack and break off in
chunks if not applied and taken care of correctly. I painted a primered
metal panel with this stuff once and the paint eventually started to chip
off. Just my experience

Good point. Fancy finished usually need to be "baked' on to hold well. Or
coated in a heavy layer of sealer, which changes it.
