I haven't had problems running synth straight in, & no problem running 
guitar into the 410, but if I'm processing vocals or sax I generally
use the ART TubeMP because it's small, cheap, and I own one.

Also, in case anyone's interested, Musician's Friend has the Levelar
in their new catalog for $79.99.  Don't know if others have the deal, but 
it's certainly the cheapest I've ever seen them.

Same here, I use a Dual MP which, to my ears at least, is a really nice preamp.

And that's a great price. I use a Levellar in my bass pedalboard and like
it a lot.
