Speaking of scopes: we just picked up a brand new dual trace, 20MHz
scope from Radio Shack where they are on special for $249! Came with
probes. Quality and features look very good. I'd say jump on it and
avoid those old scopes....

OT-Oscilloscope questions

2000-09-21 by CHRIS PARKER

Things seem pretty slow on the list today, so I'll ask these off-topic questions.

I have been given an opportunity to buy a Tektronix 465M 100 MHz scope for $75.00. I understand that this is the military version of the Tek 465. It is, of course, being sold "as is" , but I trust the guy who is selling it and everything seems to work fine. This price is just for the scope w/cover and power cord....no probes or manual.

Hopefully, some of you electronics gurus out there can answer these questions:

1. Is the 465M a good scope (I've never heard anything bad about any Tek products, but I thought I'd ask!)?

2. Is this a good price, assuming everything is working?

3. How difficult will it be to have this scope tested/repaired/calibrated (are there still parts available, etc.)?

Thanks!

Tek makes great scopes...something HP really has trouble doing! (It's the
reverse for logic analyzers IMO)

The 465 and 475 are well built scopes. The problem with them is they are
starting to get very old and when they break, it's gets more and more
difficult to get them fixed. I would ask a test equipment repair shop in
your area what typically goes (I think it's the power supply) and if THEY
think getting a 465 repaired is a problem.

If not, the $75 is a very good price. I just sold a 475 (200MHz) for $300
and the guy was happy to pay it.

1. Is the 465M a good scope (I've never heard anything bad

I have a 465B and love it. It is a fine scope. I have no idea what the M
version does to it other than make it 10 times more expensive like anything
the militaery buys. :)

2. Is this a good price, assuming everything is working?

I paid $400 for mine including two probes. $75 is a GREAT price it is all
works.

3. How difficult will it be to have this scope tested/repaired/calibrated
(are there still parts available, etc.)?

I don't know. Mine has been just fine since I bought it. My buyer let me
try it out for a while before I paid. I got a few tips from Paul on what to
look for.
