The fabulous MOTM ribbon controller

The fabulous MOTM ribbon controller

1999-06-14 by Dave Bradley

Hah! That got your attention.

Actually I just wanted to gloat because this weekend I recovered my old Moog
Model 1050 ribbon controller from a friend. It looks in surprisingly good
shape, considering it lived in a trunk in a barn loft for 15 years. The
ribbon itself looks fine, and the contact is only slightly rusted. I had it
modded a long time ago to output positive gates instead of S trigs, so as
soon as I figure out how to get power to it, I'll hook it up to my MOTM and
see if it still works!

So you've heard that rumor as well!! I believe some smart, talented, dashing,
debonair gent mentioned The Exquisite MOTM Ribbon Controller just being
around the corner (or was that around the bend?) -- so maybe your "new" find
can give Paul some insight into building one eventually after all (I hope).

And thanks again to John S. for his MOTM 800 mod (I've been using a 100K
resistor -- cause that's what I had), and for a good choice in cable
material. I've been using banana jacks (due to another brand of synth) which
I do prefer since it's easier to get everything modulating everything else
with them. I haven't noticed excessive hum or noise, but I have noticed
problems with crosstalk; this may be a problem more due to my mismatched
impeadences (Serge = 330, everyone else = 1K). You may want to check for that
John.

Dave, if nothing else, I'd like to hear more about your "new" find, possibly
in order to try and "brew my own."

In my new module suggestions a month or two ago, I think the ribbon
controller received the highest support ratings. Just after that time there
was a decent thread on AH on the same subject. The only "stand alone"
ribbon controller that I am aware of that is currently in production is
Kurzweil's Expressionmate which is only MIDI to the best of my knowledge and
contains a lot of other controls too (and is a bit overpriced). The
cross-sales potential of an MOTM Ribbon Controller are fairly high IMO. I
think the basic principal for doing the ribbon controller is the hardest
part of making one since there are at least several viable methods to
implement it. Maybe we can get a couple of controller knobs (levers?
sliders?) and buttons on it too; perhaps that is a separate module though.
Perhaps the ribbon controller would have a cool wooden enclosure. Perhaps
it would just be a thin strip which you could easily attach to the top of
your current controller keyboard. Perhaps it would have some type of a
scaling gage to control the range of the unit or help it to interface with
other manufacturers' equipment. Perhaps it would have lots of LEDs!!!!
(Oops! I got carried away. The MOTM is for nocturnal animals and vampires.
Lights are bad! Ha!)

John, if you decide to brew your own, you might want to try a batch of
Indian Pale Ale (IPA). It tends to complement analog modular synthesis very
well.

Cheers!
