a little OT: Keyboard Velocity Question

Does anyone know what kind of signal a velocity sensitive keyboard produces relitive to the key velocity? Is it a resistance? Is it dependent on the velocity of the key or is it a circuit measuring the time it takes to press the key to it's maximum position? -Nate
