Effects devices?

Effects devices?

1999-02-11 by Dave Bradley

What's everyone's opinion on appropriate effects devices for a modular
system? I'm not talking about built-in modules like phasers, but your
typical digital multi effects unit. My criteria would be:

1. rack mountable so I can stick it in my synth cabinet
2. separate inputs and outputs for the dsp engines to provide flexible
patching (Was it the Ensoniq DP-4 that had 4 discrete inputs and outputs?)
3. synchable delay times and lfos to MIDI sync and/or external control
voltage support.
4. really good sound (duh)

Does anyone have any candidates? I've lost track of what's available these
days.

And oh yeah, I should be able to afford it, so multi thousand $$ Lexicons
don't count.

I use an Ensoniq DP/4 which go for about $450 nowadays.

The Lexicon MPX-1 has gotten rave reviews as well (~$600).

For "grunge", I sort of miss my Yamaha SPX-90.

One of my favorites is the Digitech TSR24. I don't believe they make
these anymore, you may be able to pick a used one up cheap. The newer
Digitech processors are similar. The TSR24 has two independent inputs
and four outputs. Programming it is just like patching a modular.
You create an algorithm by selecting various sound modules and
creating links between them. The unit can also be upgraded to
contain a second SDISC processor for really huge patches, or to
switch or cross-fade patches on the fly.

The only thing I don't like about the unit is its poorly
designed System Exclusive protocol. I usually write my
own SysEx Editors find this implementation particularly
lacking.

I've been looking at the Lexicon MPX-1. To which planet must I travel to get
it for $600? The lowest I've found is $999! Does anyplace still sell the
DP/4?
