I stained it with 2 coats of MinWax red oak, first treating it with a
MinWax
pre stain to even out the color since birch is kind of soft. Then I applied
3 coats of polyurethane, applying steel wool before the last 2 coats. The
finish rocks! The secret for me turned out to be MinWax Wipe On Poly.

Dave,
Thanks for sharing your experience and photos. I would like to echo
Dave's comment on Wipe-on poly. I first found this about 15 years ago.
Since then I have never used anything else. You have to be a total smuck
not to be able to get a nice even finish with this stuff. It goes on so
thin, you need more coats. BUT, no long dry time, no bubbles, no runs. It
is the best.

I am pleased to hear that you are still embracing the idea of the magic
bus. I still have not had a chance to look into getting the paint finish
on mine. I would be interested in hearing how you plan to implement the
new rails and the magic bus. I am "thinking" about flat rails where the
modules do not contact the magic bus and "L" shaped rails (recycled from my
rack stuff) for the modules next to the magic bus. I am also thinking
about the center wood support properly cut out to accept the magic bus. So
many options, so little time.

Er, I don't know yet. That's why I built this first cabinet without space
for a bus. It will become my top cab, and I'll build a second slant front
for the bottom, taking the time to figure out all the bus mounting issues.

I haven't found anybody locally either that can match the MOTM paint.
