Oh, yeah!

#1.5: Doepfer: Maybe around 6,000?

This is just my educated guess. Feel free to add comments!

#1: Moog. About 11,000 over 10yr period (Bob Moog told me this in 1987)

#2: PAiA 2700/4300 about 3,500 (wild-ass guess)

#3: MOTM: as of this minute 996 shipped, another 88 on order :) And going up
every day!

#4: Roland 700/100m: guessing around 900 to1100 total

#5: Aries: guessing around 1000

#6: Polyfusion: wild-assed guess of about 500 (may be MUCH lower)

#7: Buchla: (all series) about 450 (Don B. offhand comment to me around 1986
at AES convention)

I'll believe the Moog thing since it came straight from Bob, but that
count seems about 5x too high.
Any guesses on Serge?

Re: [motm] Modular sales?

Are these total sales of *modules* or *systems*? (it's 1000 modules for
MOTM, right?)

450 seems awfully low for Buchla *modules*, since Grant Richter's (F/i) and
Richard Franecki's (Voco Kesh, ex-F/i) systems in Milwaukee would account
for nearly a quarter of those! (I've seen Grant's, which is about 40
modules IIRC - and I've been told that Richard's is 1.5 times the size of
Grant's)

And 11000 sounds right for Moog *modules* - divide by Ben's 5 and you get
2200 *systems*? (but 5 modules/system doesn't sound right either?!?)

Modules.

Remember, a small Buchla 200 system, in 1972 dollars, was as much as 4 new
Corvettes!

Maybe if you include the reselling of unsatisfied users ...

paul,
for some reason, that seems way too low for a total module count for buchla.
would only be about 20 -25 systems and over all those years, i would have
thought it would be more on the order of 100 systems. the flip side is that
11,000 seems too high for moog........
then again, what do i know..........

paul,
that figure seems high to me - still, it is an interesting question and i
really don`t know the correct answer.

But remember, one can sell a great deal if he doesn't have to concentrate on
(that pesky) R&D.

I agree with others that this number seems a bit low, but (as Paul mentions)
it was an offhand comment. Maybe with some reflection he'd have a different
number.

The Buchla numbers probably are a little low. The biggest sales of these
units was typically universities, and there are more than a few that had
decent sized systems (same goes for Moogs).

I would also add Emu to the list; they probably produced at least 400+
modules based on the few systems I've seen (Frank Zappa alone had over a
tenth of those).
