RE: [motm] Cabinet Question -- Assembly

RE: [motm] Cabinet Question -- Assembly

Thanks!

When you say 'glued into slots,' are these slots that are built up from wood
shims, or are they chiseled into the side panels...? Maybe they are cut into
the side panel with a router, and then the beams are glued and hammered
until they 'pop' into place...? Am I over-thinking this?

If you could take a close look tonight, I'd appreciate it. I was looking on
the web for photos, but the photos people take show more of wiring
harnesses, modules, etc. and not so much the wood cabinet joinery and the
wooden exteriors.

The main horizontal beam on a Moog lower cabinet is glued into slots on each
side.
I'll have to check if it is visible. There is one brace in the middle of
the beam
connecting to the bottom of the cabinet. This evening I can send out one of
the
pics I took showing the flat rails that also shows the joint at the side of
the
cabinet.

Wow, I wouldn't have thought glue would be enough, but I guess it is! Hmm...

I'm going to go on the hunt for a nice book on cabinetry/woodworking and see
how these kinds of design problems are solved.

I just spent a few moments staring at the joints and they are quite
deceiving! They
appear to be simple butt joints but there is a thin piece of veneer on the
edges!
The side is cut away such that the top fits in with notches on the front and
back
(like a tab and slot but the slot is almost the depth of the cabinet). [I'm
really
doing a horrible job describing this - I'm not a woodworker...]

There are no screws inside or out that I can find so it must be all glued.
There is
a thin triagular brace fit into each joint.

I've attached three more jpegs that might help. The first shows the middle
brace
and some of the side attachement as well as a bit of the triagular braces.
The
second shows a bit more of the bottom joint along with the hinged lower
panel. The
third shows an upper cabinet which has the same joints but without the
triangular
braces. I hope this helps.
