Have you decided what kind the new flat rails will use? Will they still be
#8-32X3/8", just shorter? Or the same length...?

3/8". You measure the threads only.

They are #8-32.

Why isn't one enough.  If you use something on the back (for pots or
whatever) it doesn't show.  I got those brass ones from Mouser I told you
about. They are fine.
