Thinking about 5U (again)

Thinking about 5U (again)

2014-06-14 by Paul Schreiber

Started this thread over on Muff's:

Feel free to chime in here or over there.

If I were to make another 5U MOTM assembled (no kits, that horse left the
barn years ago), what module would you want to buy?

My Current Euro modules are here:

And the new E102 digital "ASR" is discussed here:

Both! The pc boards are "universal" with dual power connectors and sized to
fit standard MU or MOTM panels.

Paul, are you talking about MOTM or MU panel format?

RE: [motm] Thinking about 5U (again)

Paul! Great news!

5U forever!!!

When I do modular shows the euro rack dudes(...yes it's unfortunate that it's 90% dudes) gasp when I open my case and just get pissed off that girls want to take selfies in front of it.

Here's a list if what you need to design first.

1. A flashy Sequencer with at least 32 steps that will hypnotize people watching from the back of the room...none of this one knob to program each step business that I think you dodged a bullet not putting out for anyone but Robert Rich(...who's great and super nice dude on top of it) maybe an full version and an scaled down "JR" version as well.

2. A dedicated 2 channel Scale quantizer so us MOTMers don't have to have white Modcan panels in our sea of black...all the major, minor ones...the avant garde just intonation, Harry Partch etc... Also some African, Middle East, Eastern Asia, South American etc...it also works with Hz/V and Buchla systems as well. Just make the best darn scale quantizer ever.

3. A much more developed additive synth VCO.s. And yes I use my 300/310/510 wave warper all the time for that sort of stuff but I'd like to not have to use 1/4 of my live rig just for FM synthesis. I could use module that was an true DUAL SINE wave VCO that had internal LFO and A/D EG to modulate. I'd love to have a single voice "DX" to create the texture of rubber glass.

4. An easier way to integrate the more extreme Euro-Rack modules into my system...love the Harvestman stuff and I highly doubt you're interested in designing some of the harsher digital
things he's building but I'd like to use them as 5U. Get into some deal with the best weirdo designers to make MOTM format faceplates for them...kinda like the reverse of what you did with Blacet and Euro stuff.

That's enough for now...but glad you're back to 5U!

I too would love to see more 5U from you, Paul! I second David’s call for a big-ass sequencer and a scale quantizer, and I’d love to see filter bank, pan/crossfade/scanner, phaser/flanger, and tube distortion modules.

As the owner of the pinup system in the thread on Muff's I feel obligated to jump in.... :)

Personally I've been wanting the Cloud Generator (in 5u; MOTM-520) from the first point it was mentioned so a 5U (possibly expanded version) of the e340 would be at the top of my list.

Next up would be the morphing terrarium.

As far as stuff out on the market which has caught my eye but I haven't pursued due to the lack of a similar 5U module would be the make noise Rene or the STS Sequencer Programmer (SQP6). As soon as I think of stored voltage settings I'd want a quantizer of some variety...

Having built a majority of my system from kits I can now confidently say that I've got that out of my system. I have some CGS, Serge/CGS, and Buchla LPG (clones) to build still but for the most part life is such that I'm squarly in the "assembled" camp going forward.

I can easily see myself continuing to expand my 5U system as I'm a captive audience, not really wanting to start another format. I feel like I have the core bread and butter modules covered and that for the most part my interests lie in more esoteric designs which add color around the fringe.

-greg (a happy 5U owner, ready for more)

+1 for the Cloud Generator and morphing terrarium!

I won’t try to get you to reconsider doing kits - but what about parts lists, faceplates and PCBs? That is generally how I have been able to afford my 5u habit, and to be honest, I quite enjoy it.
