I would say this is where a lot of synth DIY is done/discussed. BTW: Muff's
is a great forum for all things synth.

Most of the discussion of 'investment' in MOTM has not been about monetary value so much as commitment to a growing and evolving platform.  You invest by buying all the unsexy modules, the power supplies, the cabinets, etc, knowing that they are the framework within which new sounds and features can be added down the road in relatively modest increments.  This is what makes spending 4 (or 5) figures on a modular different than buying, say, a vintage 2600 or Jupiter 8 or Synthi.  

I think what everyone is concerned about is the health and long-term prospects of MOTM as a format, such that those new and exciting modules keep turning up in our format of choice, whether that means kits, plug-n-play, or DIY (and for some of us, the 100% DIY option isn't really an option).  And while it's great that there are some non-SynthTech MOTM options out there, it would be nice to get the benefit of Paul's design and implementation work which we've been teased with for the better part of a decade now.

(As far as monetary value goes, if any given module depreciates over time, well, that only works in favor of those of us who don't mind picking up a bargain on eBay instead of staying 100% build-it-yourself.)
