RIP Jürgen Haible

RIP Jürgen Haible

2011-12-01 by Jeff Laity

Terrible news.

Sorry if this news has been posted already by someone else here in the forum (I am quite new to it, registered just for the purpose of making this announcement), but I think you should know:

I have to tell you that Juergen Haible has been found death in his home in Nuremberg, Germany some days ago. The reason for his death is unknown yet; it seemed to have stricken him "out of the blue".

Appended you will find the death notice from today's Nuremberg newspaper.

I suppose many people here knew Juergen very well, at least from his talents in designing pcbs, helping others building them, and making excellent electronic music. Me being "all thumbs" in electronics, I always admired how he combined his technical and musical skills with his desire to let everybody participate in his progresses. But more, I lose a friend who had been - together with his wife Birgit - in our church in Erlangen/Tennenlohe for a long time and with whom we shared many good hours. We had gotten out of sight for a couple of years, but "met" again only some weeks ago on Facebook.

Our thoughts are with his family; his two cute children, Tassilo and Anais, aged 10 and 2, lost a loving father.

Well that is just horrendous news. We lose a monumental figure in the SDIY community, and his family loses a father and husband. Just terrible. I will listen to one of his CDs later tonight.

:( Unglaublich. Jürgen contributed SO MUCH to
the synth DIY community over the years.

Here's the oldest email I could find from "JH",
sharing knowledge as he usually did:

From: "Haible J. ZFE BT SE 42" <Juergen.Haible@...>
To: "'analogue'" <analogue@...-state.edu>
Subject: MS-20 PWM mod
Date: Fri, 09 Sep 94 10:34:00 PDT
Message-Id: <2E70A004@smtp-gate-erls>

Hi all!

Last night I opened my MS-20 to change some worn-out potis.
I also did a slight modification, adding pulse width modulation
for Oscillator 1 by LFO.

I always wanted the MS-20 to have this feature that can be found
even in the small MS-10. But I didn't want to change the MS-20's
outfit (no extra potis, jacks etc.). As oscilliator 2 offers two different
pulse shapes, I decided to sacrifice the manual PW waveform on
osc 1 for LFO PWM.

The following is a description of what I have done:

(1) Replace the 1k Resistor that goes from the PW poti's ccw pin
to ground by a small red LED (this will set the initial width to
about 30%, which I think is a better initial position than 50%).
The kathode of the LED is on GND, the anode on the poti.

(2) Add a 10k resistor to bias the LED. Resistor is soldered on
copper side between the LED's anode (ccw pin of PW poti)
and +15V (look for pin 8 of the next dual OpAmp if you are
not sure).

(3) Add a direct connection from the LFO ramp output (pin 6
of the TL081) to the cw pin of the PW poti. (This point is
originally very high impedance, so nothing has to be removed)

This simple modification will provide PWM for the MS-20.
The PW poti now acts as PWM poti. On ccw position you
have a fixed pulse width of about 30%. On cw position
you have a symmetrical PWM between 70% and 30%.

As the ring modulation position of osc 2 also uses the pulse
of osc 1, pwm will affect the ring mod sound as well.

JH.

Jürgen, I hope you're making beautiful music.

;(

I..don't know what to say. There are no words.

Nevermind JH was a great friend and one of the best electronic music engineers of my generation: he was above all a devoted family man. I grieve for his wife and children. Now I am going to go cry.

Jurgen was very kind to us. He was generous and patient. He answered
my stupid and Will's not so stupid stupid questions with gentlemanly
tolerance from the first time we corresponded regarding panels for his
Tau Pipe module in June of 2007. Will and he corresponded - Will urging
him to design a Vocoder. He touched our lives and we are better for it.
We have shed tears today, but this salty currency can't reflect the
value of Jurgen's friendship or the light of his spirit and truth.

Deeply saddened by the news of Juergen's passing. He was a singular figure in the renaissance of modular synthesizers, and a truly generous soul. We are all the richer for having known him.

Juergen was a genuinely decent person. Along with many others, I will
miss him dearly. His album "Dark November" was compiled when he was
going through some health issues back around 2000. As I listen to it
one could tell that Juergen was an optimist. I just hope that there
will be some avenue that opens up that lets us share our experiences
with Juergen, with his children when they get older. His children
knew a different side of Juergen than we did. They need to know what
a fine person he was to every one and the ways he touched many of us.
As great of a father as he was, he far exceeded what they even knew.
I hope there is a way to let them know that their dad was wonderful
beyond what they could learn in the short time he was with them. Many
of us knew Juergen far longer than his kids did. That is so very sad.
They need to know that their dad was held in the highest regard by a
great many people.

Peace.

Tom,

nicely said although the facts are ultimately very sad...

A few days ago I praised his "Living VCO" as an unsung hero of all oscillator designs - might be the day when he died...

All the best to all the good (living and dead) guys

Re: [motm] Re: RIP Jürgen Haible

2011-12-05 by Scott Deyo

This is so tough. I feel so bad for his wife and kids. Jurgen was such an inspiration for many years, to all of his. I remember looking at those huge circuits on protoboard and being so ASTOUNDED that not only did they work at all, but sounded fantastic! He was truly insane in the best way. May he live on in his kids, in the memories of his friends, and in every piece of music made from his circuits.
