5U + MU

5U + MU

2010-11-04 by Paul Schreiber

I am thinking that there may be enough market in MU for some new + existing
MOTM designs. This would allow a new SMT variant to work in both formats
(dual power connectors) and minimize risk in 5U only market.

It costs, for the first batch of 100, ~ $24/board for tooling, programming
and stuffing a SMT board. After that, the cost plummets to ~ $14/board. This
is just labor, no parts cost. As a rough idea, when I pay Shane the Tech to
hand-solder boards, it averages about $16/board for a 2U and $11 for a 1U.

What the 'frontrunners' are going forward is a new MOTM-440 'refresh' using
newer ICs (same sound, not to panic) and the Morphing Terrarium in 5U/MU
(not a re-panel, new pc board layout). If these are successful (meaning, I
sell 50 of each *combined* format) then I would probably move a
re-engineered MOTM-300 and MOTM-480 into SMT/MU along with a 5U/MU E560
Deflector Shield (sorry Kenneth) and a as-yet-un-named distortion module
which is the MOTM-510 replacement (probably the MOTM-515 WaveWarper II or
such).

Again, this is just one of multiple scenarios I am considering. Other
thoughts welcome.

Moog Unit

it's technically a unit of measurement, 2.125" wide by 8.75" tall. it's Moog format.

What the hell is a Deflector Shield and why does my synth need a deflector
sheild? :-)

How else to prevent damage from a Zorlon Cannon?

You don't need one. None of us need anything for it's name. This market is not for people who don't define instruments by their name, but by their sound (and character enhancement of their big ass wall of a sound machine). My modules all have US Social Security numbers and I refer to them as "My peoples." If it was named "Best Damned Frequency Shifter Ever" would it make a sonic difference? Or how about "Phasequency Modulashifter" as a sum of its parts? Deflector Shield... Sure, it's a funky name, but look at the history of funky names briefly:

Moog Source, source of what?

Sequential Prophet, new religion?

Arp Avatar, predicting James Cameron's future?

Roland Jupiter, Mars, Juno, etc, Celestial compass?

Arp Odyssey, homage to Homer? (not the "Doh!" one people, cmon now)

Korg Monopoly, I know the board game is popular but sheesh.

Moog Prodigy, genius from youth?

Any other funky junky names i missed guys? Now all we need is a Moog Ghandi, a Dave Smith Jesus, a Korg Komet, a Yahama Hot Dog (or in Mooglanguage like lil'phatty it would be Hawt Dawg) and a Roland Da Bass and we will be sorted.

Have a great weekend guys!

i have a couple of modules which have unusual names, but there are very good reasons for them that relate directly to the nature of the device and its historical context.

I dunno, Nintendo Fart Monster may have been more appropriate.

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
