Wire a big deal?

Call those same people up and ask for the price of 300pcs of:

a) 6" of RG-174 stripped and tinned
b) 6" long of 22ga red/black twisted wire, stripped and tinned


I'll be lunch that even if they quote, the price is MORE than my 32-bit DSP 
used in the Euro modules. For a PIECE OF WIRE.

When is the last time a piece of high volume electronics gear had even *1* 
wire in it? It's all flex cables, ribbon cables, SATA serial cables or NO 
CABLES at all.

So, the old-fashioned "wiring harness" manufacturers are drying up faster 
than the floppy disc salesmen. They only people using discrete wiring are in 
vehicles, military and high-end industrial doo-dads.

I might have to try China. There is no one locally that even *wants* to mess 
with my piddle-assed wire requirements. I sent out like 5 RFQs and got only 
1 bid back and it was laughable.

I, for one, would have no problem getting a loop of wire in my kit and take
it upon myself to cut, strip and tin them as needed.

Do the twisted pairs have a critical spec (twists/inch)? That might be a bit
too sloppy for hand twisting.

I know here in Cleveland there's probably a lot of people/students right now
that would jump at the opportunity to make a few bucks doing low-skill
piecework.

Hey All -

This wire issue isn't really applicable for the 2.0 builder unless they're counting on getting their wire in the form of the little wire extra parts packs from Synth Tech.

As I'm reading Paul's letter, I suspect that his point is that to get the wire cheaply enough to hold the modules' price at a certain point, even paying a kid to do the cutting, stripping, and tinning would be too costly.  Is this the case, Mr. Schreiber?

As for twists in the twisted pairs/triples/etc.s, I sure hope it's not
critical 'cause if it is Dad and I are f*cked! LOLs

Your point, though, Mr. James, is well taken especially in light that the MOTM customer base may be tolerant of some price increases.  (I'm thinking the issue of the ever increasing potentiometer prices)  My Dad has often said that fitty $ more or less isn't critical.

But the customer base may be less tolerant of delay - not that it's mattered much to us.
