Analog Devices strikes again :(

Analog Devices strikes again :(

2010-03-11 by Paul Schreiber

Analog Devices has just *obsoleted* 3 critical parts used in MOTM modules:

SSM2210PZ NPN array (440/490)
SSM2220PZ PNP array (420/440/480)
MAT-02EH NPN array (300/310)

What does this mean?

a) prices for the above modules and Extra Parts kits have increased
effective immediately, because........

b) I now have to buy these parts on the 'gray market'. They are *still
available* but NOT from standard suppliers like DigiKey & Mouser. This
means.......

c) the price of these just went up 50-75%.

d) all orders that have already been placed will ship at the original price.
These backorders will pretty much deplete the stock I have, so I'm in the
process as we speak getting quotes for these parts. It will not be pretty :(

e) ADI claims that *at some point* (cough) there will be "drop-in"
replacements for the 2210/220 but *only in SMT*. There is a *planned*
(double cough) MAT-02EH replacement still in the metal can.

I'm doing all I can to support these 10+ years old designs, but man is it
getting harder and harder :(

Not sure if they're as good but there's the LS358 dual PNP and
LS318 dual NPN (the latter reportedly 50+4.40 USD direct from
Linear Systems).

Hey Paul, In the far future, will you be forced to end up:

A. redesigning, but keeping DIY alive
B. redesigning, but no longer available for DIY
C. be unable to produce certain modules

In the far future, will certain filter modules no longer sound as good? Will the oscillators not sound as good or be as stable?

That sucks. What we need is whatever technological advances are necessary for someone to clone and self-manufacture IC's.

Well, this came up on the SDIY list a minute ago:

And otherwise I go to school a little ways down the street from AD intergalactic headquarters - "Hey, wait, keep these following ICs in production, please...!" I wish :[

Because of SMT? No and no. The silicon inside of SMDs is exactly the
same as that in through-hole components.

If you mean because of component substitutions, I think that's also a
"no and no," because tolerances seem to be getting tighter, not looser.

Just my opinion, easily wrong.

It will be at least a year away if I decide to redesign current boards in
SMT. There are still plenty of these ADI parts "floating aound", just like
the CA3080s and CA3280s. You just have to pay the piper.

The MOTM-510 WaveWarper will be redesigned but with added features and that
will be SMT.

I still sell lots of blank pc boards so there is no great rush to convert
over. I mean, TYCO has raised the price of the MOTM knob from 63 cents to
almost $2 in 12 years. And it's a knob from 1963. But think about it: who
the heck uses *pointer knobs* anymore? It's all touch screens or tact
switches or rotary encoders.

Hey Paul,

isn't there an alternative we can use for the MAT-02EH?
Can we use a MAT-02CH or BH instead?
