Shemp-A-Go-Go!!!

2000-01-27 by Tentochi

Larry does know Shemp very well of course. I am not quiet at all. I am
just not around much. Har har har! (That would be Hardy har har! if I were
a pirate.)

If you realize, only a few people have seen me. While lots of people have
seen Larry, Curly and Moe.

I will be at the Analog Heaven gathering in Fort Wayne, IN, the end of March
if I don't go to South by SouthWest in Austin, TX, at that time.

Very quick background. Tentochi is one of my band's names, but since I use
it for email it has stuck to me directly for people who don't know the band.
I have one of every MOTM module and 2 LFOs and 2 '420 filters. They are
mounted in an SKB pop-up mixer case along with a rackmount Novation
BassStation (to handle MIDI to CV duties as well as very occasionally adding
an extra voice), a Behringer patchbay (49 point) for mult and passthrough
duties. My main controller for this rig is a Korg Prophecy. The output
goes into a Mackie 3204 mixer. I have a Behringer Composer (basically
compression) and Aphex aural exciter type C on the main insert effect which
the output of the MOTM ultimately goes through. I usually monitor on a pair
of Mackie HR824's or Sony V660 headphones.

Here is me face (if ya care):

Hey, how'd you fit one of every module in that case?! I have far less
modules than you, but I only have space for one more module (well, 3U wide).
Do you swap out modules? Do I have a smaller SKB pop-up mixer case?

I can't buy many more modules until I figure out a better/bigger case
solution :(

David.

I had a 3204 and sold it in a fit of downsizing. Stupid. I wish I had it
back - it was great.

Tell me how you like this mixer. I have been thinking about that to
replace a Roland M240 I have in my studio as a keyboard mixer. However, I
don't know if I could go from sliders to knobs.

the 940 and one of the LFOs are not currently in the case.

I am planning on buying a second pop-up mixer case.

I love the 3204! The 1604 is the one that gets all of the hype because of
the sliders though. If you look at all of the racks of the pros, you are
more likely to find 3204s more than any other mixer. There is a reason for
this. 40 or so inputs. Stereo or mono operation on 16 channels
(balance/pan pot as appropriate). 3 bands (non-sweepable) of EQ. Easily
rackmountable. 2 mono-in stereo out send/returns. 2 stereo-in stereo-out
send/returns. One stereo main insert effect (send/return). Two stereo
busses to route your signals through--my studio mate uses this feature for
two different sets of monitors. 2 mono mic preamps. Very high quality
signal path (for the price). Minimal coloration of sound (for the price).
The ability to add slave units. Great for electronic musicians with lots o'
gear! I am thinking about getting a second, even though I don't need it at
the moment.

I think I got most of my facts straight. If I didn't, please correct me.
There are additional cool/nice things I didn't list. These are occasionally
available used, but the price doesn't drop too much (like MOTM modules!).

Yes, the 3204 is an excellent mixer, good for people who have lots of
synths. My roommate used to use one for his (all synth) band. The
best part is how compact they are for what you get (4 or 5 rack spaces,
I forget). The only thing that might put you off, if you're not an all
electronic type, is only having 2 mic preamps. But the only thing I
ever use a mic preamp for, is to adjust the level coming out of the
MOTM system! :)

I use a 1202, but if you have more than three or four synths and you
don't want to be patching and unpatching all the time, the 3204 is
probably much the better choice.

peace,
Chris Jeris
