FS: many modules!

FS: many modules!

2009-06-23 by Mark Scetta

greetings all MOTMers

i scaled down from a large system to just these favorite modules. i still
have the MOTM love but lost interest in audio hardware and need funds, so i
think it is time to pass them on, sadly. a lot of care went into building
them.

. the preamp is a very humble TL072 design, the first DIY module i
did, with Paul as teacher. as you can see the front panel 'graphics' aren't
much to look at :) but the preamps do come in handy. there are 2 that are
AC coupled and 2 DC-coupled. there are also 2 voltage sources: variable -15V
to +15V HOWEVER they are not buffered and thus actual voltage varies with
load. still cool (less predictable sometimes = more fun, right?) $95/neg

. the polyfusion EF is awesome, was one of my favorites. it does
have a stray voltage or something on ch2 but should be really easy to
troubleshoot. of course i have a complete file on it, including my PCB
layouts etc. not a difficult circuit. let me say that Harry Bissell (from
the synth-DIY list) is a saint. he worked closely with me on all of the DIY
modules below (not the above preamp) they were constructed pretty well,
despite a problem here and there.

. on ch 2 of this unit, when you turn the threshold down (just like
on a compressor), even with no input the yellow 'signal' LED comes on,
indicating that it is getting some kind of voltage when it shouldn't be.
again, it's not that complicated of a circuit and i have full docs.
DEFINITELY one of the coolest modules for wah-wah filter sounds, VCA
envelope shaping, etc. i was really surprised that Paul never offered
something like this. features a 5X audio input gain boost for the hell of
it, and both CV & gate outputs. $175

. the coolest thing i have from Paul, however is the MOTM-410. if u
haven't heard it, you are in for a real treat. the smoothly evolving LFO
filter action creates a gorgeous lush effect on pads, back vox, strings,
etc. it's so high fidelity too. i think Jurgen Haible designed it, not sure.
in any case this module was always one of my must haves, and obviously one
that i've held onto until the end. it is perfect. $250 ----SOLD

. the lin/log/lag was an earlier design by Harry. he has further
developed his lag circuit by now with i believe a very different design. i
also did this one as a 2-channel unit. it has a problem whereby when either
the UP or DOWN knobs are between say, 0 to 1, there is an audible
oscillation. beyond that it lags very well in both linear and logarithmic
modes. so, for short duration lags, it is not really useful IMO. Harry & i
weren't terribly interested in troubleshooting it for whatever reason so i
went on to other projects. that said it is still quite useful. and you might
even look him up for help with the circuit if inclined. $95

. the LFO 5a was an EFM ('electronics for musicians', i forget the
guys' name, Tom something. he designed a ton of pretty straightforward
circuits back in the day, not sure what he's doing now). i have a full file
folders on these projects including schematics, pcb layout etc. this LFO
works fine, but is not a super 'precision' type of unit a la Paul. the range
isn't the widest via pot control, but CV input allows clocking to any freq.
absolultely a great 2nd/3rd LFO.. it has some cool outputs like the
stairstep and random. i added an extra CV clock input to the design. it also
has a separate S&H section, which behaves a little differently than the
MOTM-100's, though it has been too long since i used it to remember exactly
its peculiarities. $140

. the 4-stage summer is a particularly innovative design (mine :).
it functions as a simple mixer with no volume controls. it takes 3 inputs
and sums them to 1 output. if no output is present, it cascades those 3 to
the next stage, so you can then sum 6 inputs to 1 output. this goes on for 2
more stages. so each stage can be used individually OR cascading. VERY
useful. $140

. the 2-channel VCF 8e (an Electronics for Musicians DIY circuit) is
a Korg MS20 copy. excellent HP & LP. i added an additional FREQ CV input to
each channel (for a total of 2 summing clock inputs per channel--can be
interesting..). the rez controls are very touchy, and their sweet spot is
very small, after which point they will oscillate like mad, so you have to
treat it nicely. a nice useful module. $150

. the MOTM-120 suboctave multiplexer is useful for making square
sub-waves for audio use and for sequencing etc. full description here:
http://www.synthtech.com/motm120.html $230

. homebrew drilled & tapped rails, 10RU across, best offer. i have 1
or 2 of these, see picture. pretty decent job, 98% of screw holes line up.
see pictures of my old empty enclosure on the weblink below. $neg.

schematics/pcb layouts included with all. buyer pays shipping. split
escrow fees or check/MO. slight discounts for multiple module purchase..
