MOTM Flight of the bumblebee

2008-09-18 by Koos Fockens

Hi Folks,

Just to let you know that I'm 'done (?)' recording a version of Flight of the bumblebee, using
just my modest MOTM synth, Wendy Carlos style :-)
go to my blog at www.motmsynth.blogspot.com to find more info and a link to download the
mp3.

hope you enjoy it, and look forward to your (constructive) comments :-)

I thought that was GREAT, I was smiling all the way through! Glad it wasn't
the usual 'play at warp speed' thing.

OK, Kenneth: I request 'Waltz of the Flowers" :)

I'm glad you enjoyed it. it is not the best recording ever, but it's just for fun, I'm playing with the mix a bit currently, later in the week, i may change the current MP3 with one that is better mixed. :-)
Feel free to use/abuse this for your website(s) :-)

I'll listen to the bumblebee later as I'm in the middle of several days of
intense gathering up, cleaning, testing, and photographing primo synth gear
for sale on ebay. But I saw this:

I don't know if I'm the Kenneth you're refering to, but your request is my

Really nice job! That must have taken a while!

My only suggestion, especially since you were going for sort of a W. Carlos
thang, would be to use different timbres for the lead voice in each section
instead of always the same one. Wendy describes this technique on her
Secrets of Synthesis CD. It's a really informative disc and well worth
owning IMHO.

Keep up the good work! :-)

Nice. The record scratches really add some nice atmosphere.

It did take some time indeed. :-)

I've tried to get a good flute or clarinet lead sound for a while, but wasn't happy with the results. I need an additional ADSR etc to have an enveloppe available for the 'breathy' part of wind instruments, which I have on order by the way, so I me re-do the lead part in due course.
I also want to try and add dynamics at some point because the whole thing sounds a bit lifeless, so a VCA or mixer with CV control would be great to have... Paul ? :-)

Nice work, Koos.

Jean-Jacques Perrey and I get to do that song, onstage every night,
when we do our shows, and it's an amazing tune....

That gives me the perfect opportunity to come out of "lurk" mode, and
mention that Jean-Jacques and I will be doing two, super-rare shows in
a little over a week. We'll be in NYC and Montreal.

Can't bring my modular, but we'll have lots of other fun (synth) toys,
including the amazing Ondioline. Can't wait.

Hope to meet some list members there. We'll be debuting tracks from
our new Oglio CD, "Destination Space", which comes out next
Tuesday.... Samples here:

Dunno if you consider that constructive criticism, but something
sounds out of tune to me, most evident between 0:22 and 0:24.

Hi Andre, yes I've noticed it too, strangely enough most prominent through cheap PC
speakers...I didn't hear it right away, while using my sennheisers (my wife was getting a
little tired of hearing the same tune over and over...) I will try one more time at some
point, and take a little more care in tuning the VCO's on the polyphonic parts...
can't imagine what an enourmous job Wendy Carlos must have had on those early Moogs,
that were probably quite a bit more unstable than the MOTM VCO's. I also think I may
need to double check/calibrate the 1V/OCT response of my two VCO's...
