Site update/MOTM-730 photo

2008-07-02 by Paul Schreiber

In the past week I had 4 emails from folks assuming I was no longer in
business because my website was old and stale as a piece of bread behind the
fridge.

So, please visit www.synthtech.com and start with the NEWS page, then click
over to the New Stuff page (link on the side tab).

BTW: somehow I killed the formatting midway down the page. If one of you
HTML experts can grab the source and correct this and email it back to me I
would be grateful.

BTW#2: I have not powered it up yet, I have been bouncing around all day
between the CGX schematic, the web site updates and various other things.
Will fire
it up tomorrow and verify the new CPU board and code is OK.

I've also noticed that. And even now that it's been updated, I'm more
confused than ever. Modules that were announced to be discontinued a long
while ago are still there. Some still show kit prices when I thought there
were no more kits. The FFB which was also announced as a dead project do to
little interest suddenly has new pricing (assemebled price is now lower than
old kit price) and a new estimated delivery date. The cloud generator says
it has 8 VCO's in one place (spreads apart the frequencies of 7 of the 8
oscillators), yet in another place it says it has 16 oscillators. Plus it
also has 48 filters and 48 lfos? I don't see any controls for 48 filters or
lfos nor a description of their use in the module. How does one use 48 LP
filters with only 8 or 16 oscillators anyway?

Dazed and Confused.

There is still work to clean the site up some more. I spent way too much
time on it
yesterday, I have to move on to other stuff. But I agree with all your
points. I will
have time next week on "vacation" (yea...right!) to clean up every page,
remove
all the references to kits, etc.

The Cloud Generator Expander allows control of all the internals of the
'520.
I uses USB or a panels editor (4x20 LCD and encoders). The filters are for
controlling
bandwidth of noise and LFOs into the SPREAD and CHAOS portions of the
modulation
matrix.

I don't have the panel 100% designed, I am working on the schematics today
and tomorrow
and maybe someone will be able to create one. It is a 3U wide panel, has 5
jacks along the bottom
row (SAW OUT, TRI OUT, CHAOS CV OUT, AUX CV IN and PATCH SELECT IN.

There is a USB connector (type 'B') and 3 NKK JSF-15SP2 square tact switches
(above the jacks
in a horizontal row). The top portion is the LCD and 6 rotary encoder: 3
along the top edge
and 3 along the bottom edge of the LCD (like an Oberheim Xpander). The
display is 4 lines x 20char
and is 'reverse' backlit (yellow-green characters on a black background).

The FFB is there because now that it is not a kit, I can make it in
SMT/trhu-hole 'hybrid'
for a LOT less than before.

Hey Paul,

As one of the remaining old timers I have to say this
Sounds exciting! The extra features on the expander
sound like this will be one serious monster DCO!!! I
heard that it will surpass "through zero" and go "Thru
Infinity"... is this correct?

Aesthetics Question: Will the Expander have the
smaller Frac knobs or the larger Classic MOTM knobs?
With a three space panel, and the fact it will sit
next to the original panel spacing of the actual CG
module I am hoping for the latter.

Aesthetics Comment (IMHO): The 730 pic looks awesome,
but the Frac knobs seem out of place visually. We were
taught by MOTM to learn to "envision" and build our
own systems. My visions have been of PKES knobs, even
if smaller than normal monstro size. This is one
reason why I just can't put Bruce's white Modcan
panels in my system. I would love to see a picture of
the 730 with the smaller PKES60 on those shafts. I'll
be going that route with mine.

Alco PKG50B1/4 is a nice small knob. Example:

The thru-zero is *linear*, as opposed to exponential on the Cynthia ZO.
So, it will have a different timbre to it. What iwill be more fun is the
Sine modulation routing is set up as 2-operator Yamaha FM. Using the
CGX, you can assing the AUX CV IN to change the index or the carrier
ratio and get all sorts of interesting sounds.

The CGX uses custom knobs that are not ar tall as the Frac knobs.
They do not have pointer lines. They are black with white endcaps.
The endoders use metric D-shafts.

Well, the issue is with Vishay/Spectrol. I may have to use either
Frac pots or switch to Bourns pc board mount (like in the MOTM-800).
Newark is now quoting over *$7ea* for the pots. Since *every* manufacturer
*but me* is using 75 cent pots, this could be a problem for me trying to
keep the costs down. When the pots were $3-$4 I can take that, but not $7.

In the case of the '730 it was a mechanical fit issue.

I see. There are either 3 or 6 lfos/filters per oscillator depending on
whether the 520 has 8 or 16 oscillators, which is still unknown.

>>CGX is a 3U wide panel, has 5 jacks along the bottom row (SAW OUT, TRI

The Sine and Pulse waves on one board and the Saw and Tri on the other.
That's a very awkward split in functions. It's going to be expensive to get
those much sought after supersaw waves. I had thought this was because
there wasn't room on the 520 panel because you didn't want to go 3U. But
then the CGX is going to be 3U. Seems backwards to me.

>>The FFB is there because now that it is not a kit, I can make it in

Ah. It's nice to see it return, although you should have reconcidered not
holding back and going with a full 15 band FFB.

thomas white writes:

Actually, I don't think we know much about the extra expander features,
other than it will allow detailed editing and access to the 520. But what
that means or what use that will have seems unknown.

The only small knobs that would go with the style of the other MOTM modules
would be the smaller sized MOTM knobs like those used on the Encore UEG.

Agreed.

I fully support the use of smaller knobs, as exemplified by Encore
and Tellun. More functions per panel, thank you very much! :-)
