650 OS Update Status....

650 OS Update Status....

2008-06-18 by James Elliott

Paul, I know you are busy working on the 730 & cloud generator and you have been providing regular updates regarding them (thank you), however we haven't heard anything regarding the status of the 650's OS update for a while. I understand that someone else is doing the coding, is that currently taking place? I'm anxious to be able to take advantage of the 650 without it crashing on me.

Regards,
Jim

Re: [motm] 650 OS Update Status....

Hopefully Jeffrey will step in and give us an update. I have not heard from
him in a while.

Meanwhile: the majority of the issues are using external clock to drive the
arpeggiators and using Voice Group 1/1/1/1 (4 independent MIDI channels).
The Voice Group
bug seems to be if you change from/into 1/1/1/1 mode. I think if you *start*
there (the default patch) you are OK.

I have not heard of any other bugs/crashes except in these 2 cases. If
anyone has other bug to report, please do so.

Here's the details of a bug that I turned in last year which causes my 650 to "crash".

Hopefully this gets addressed in the next update as it is frustrating to no end.

Paul, you've asked the list to send you any errors / descriptions of funky behavior that we encounter. I've already sent you a general description of these problems on 10/13, and I will go into more detail here.

General Problem: My 650 quits responding to midi when I send midi cc's to control aux1. When I say quit responding I mean that the output jacks do not transmit a signal - the midi LED still responds to midi. One of two things happens once the 650 is in this state.

1) If I perform the following actions, then the 650 begins to respond to midi again (however it will lock up again if I send midi cc's to aux1)
-Press "ESC"
-Scroll to, and then select, "Module Actions"
-Scroll to, and then select, "Load Patch"
-and finally, load a patch

2) If I don't follow the steps above, I get various assert errors depending on different buttons that I press
-L612: I get this error when I press "Enter" after a lockup
-L2039: When I press "Inc" after a lockup
-L2167: When I press "dec" after a lockup
-L548: First I press "ESC", which allows me to scroll through the top level menu, then press "Enter" on any of the second level menu items

My 650 is setup as follows:
-Global options:
1) Voice Type - 1/1/1/1
2) CtrlMidi Chan - 1
3) Trig PWM - 10ms
4) VelScale - 8 Volts
5) Backlight - Auto
6) TunTable - 12 Tone
7) Note Inv - Off
8) Priority - LastNote
9) Clock - Internal
10) IClk BPM - 120.0
11) Midi Clk - Transmit
12) Patch Rx - Disabled (I also tried enabled, whatever that does?)
13) SysexSys ID=Global

-VoiceGroup 1 Settings:
1) VG1 Midi Chan - 1
2) VG1 Allc - Solo
3) VG1Glide - Off
4) VG1PBend - 24
5) VG1GType - Normal
6) VG1 V/T - Velocity
7) VG1 Aux - CC12 (Tried others as well with the same issue resulting)
8) VG1AuxSc - 8 Volts

-VoiceGroups 2 - 4 are set up exactly like group 1 except that the PBends are set to 0, and the Aux Midi CC's are set to different values (13, 14, 15).

-Both Arps are turned off.

**This also happens in other other voice modes as well 4/poly1, 4/poly2, 2/2/poly1, etc.......

I really hope this gets fixed in the next patch release because having one of the 4 aux outs messed up sucks. Other than this problem, the 650 is a pretty cool module.

Paul, do you have any updates regarding the 650's bug fixes? I would really like to be able to send CC's to all the AUX outs without the 650 crashing on me.

Thanks,
Jim

Perhaps this is why "The Pro 2000 is what we recommend for controlling
a MOTM synthesizer."

http://www.synthtech.com/kenton.html

Shows up on the first page of Google search for Kenton Pro 2000. I
suspect that's old information. But it's a great price!

Also wondering here about the software update. I use
CC's a lot and need to be able to use them without
crashing my 650. Hoping and fingers crossed,

Thomas

The good news is, working on the 650 is next on my task list. The bad news
is, I'm having some health problems so it's hard for me to get anything
done right now. I hope to work on it very soon, but I can't make any
promises.

No, that link is dead, however this one is good....

Seriously though Paul, when is the 650 going to get its update????? I would love to buy the 730 and the cloud generator, however I'm not going to buy anymore MOTM digital modules until the 650 is bug free.

My other reply beat your post, sorry.

Sorry to hear about your health problems. I've had some lately too, it sux. Hopefully all turns out well with whatever it is you're going through. And please don't take my previous post as an insult in any way. I'm just anxious to get a working 650 that I spent a lot of money on......

650 aux issue

2008-08-31 by Richard

Hi list.

I am trying to use a MIDI breath conroller to play my modular through the
650, and I have an issue with the aux signal. I have patched up the aux 1 to
CC7 (volume) and vhen I connect this to the CV port of my VCA the output is
very "noisy" - sounds like white noise and pops mixed in with the synth
sound. Looking at the signal from aux 1 in a scope shows the stair-shape of
the curve from DA-converting, but no spikes/other artifacts. When I connect
the VCA to an EG, everything sounds OK - but then of course I cannot control
volume with breath.

Using breath to open the filter works OK (not so sensitive to artifacts?)

Do I need to do some processing of the aux 1-signal in order to smooth it
out before applying it to the VCA?

Also, is there a revision of the 650 manual since version 0 [april 2006]?

Rgds

Richard

Years ago when I first hooked up a Midi breath controller to the MOTM, I had
a similar problem. All the stepping came through into the sound. I made a
point to be sure to let others know that you need to smooth it out with a
lag processor (as Paul S. pointed out). You can see the 820 lag processor

Re: Patch Books (was: [motm] 650 aux issue)

2008-09-02 by Kenneth Elhardt

Greg James,
>>Speaking of patches: whatever happened to the patch books that were going
to be published? I got the first one but haven't heard anything more about
them.<<

Hello Greg,
There haven't been anymore as of yet. There are a number of issues with
those. After doing the first one I realized what a pain they are to do, not
that that would stop me. Another, is trying to find patches and sounds that
are complex enough to warrant doing other patch books. For instance, Paul
recommended I might cover brass instruments, and I actually started patching
up my Alesis Ion/MMV style brass patches on it, but I ran out of modules and
the touchy and imprecise nature of the FM on the attacks of notes is very
hard to do on the MOTM. When I cut out some of the complexity I was left
with brass sounds that didn't justify doing a patch book because they were
too simple. I figured I could do vocal sounds and show several ways to go
about getting great choir sounds, but then I have to start using a bunch of
other gear that most people don't have and that leads to complaints.
There's also the problem that these patch books are probably benefitting too
few people. It seems like a lot of work to go through if only 15 people (or
whatever number) are the only receipiants. But I'm still thinking about
what family of sounds might work for other patch books.

I also keep throwing around the idea in my mind that maybe I should just do
a DVD that covers in detail all kinds of stuff including new techniques and
sounds I've come up with that I've never mentioned or made demos of. That
wouldn't be specific to the MOTM, but cover all the stuff I've done over the
years on many different synths. But with synthesis being a dead art, I
never know how many would sell. It would have to get onto Amazon.com like
Carlos' "Secrets of Synthesis" to maybe even justify doing, and still I'm
not sure. I hate spending a lot of time on something that doesn't pay off.

So right now, things are kind of in limbo until I have more time to figure
out what to do.
