panel for SKB mixer case

panel for SKB mixer case

2008-03-01 by groovyshaman

I was wondering if anyone has done a 2U high module/front panel for a
MOTM synth in a SKB mixer pop-up case that would fill the bottom 2U of
space. I know that Stooge Larry did one back in the day that had 4 x 4
mults built in. I was wondering if anyone else had any designs. I am
looking to build one that will hold a small power supply, and possibly a
mixer w/line outs, or small speakers, or mults. Not much space there so
not sure yet what will fit.

Larry's design also incorporated an MOTM-900 PSU. i have two of these
modules in my synth and they are much loved.

IIRC, Stooge Moe still has the panel definition file around.

Thanks Jason for your reply. Yea I knew about the PSU in there. I was
just wondering what the other creative minds out there may have come up
with. There's not that much space so I'm not sure if I can fit
everything I'd like: output mixer, 2" speakers, PSU, mults, input
preamp; perhaps if I go with a smaller 0.4A PowerOne it may fit (but
I've heard rumors that is 3-term regulator type).

If you would like a modular system for your modular, Mid Atlantic makes a
2U frame that can fit various sub-panels, including blank panels and
cut outs for different types of connectors.

Looks interesting Mark, thanks for the link.

I just confirmed on the power-one.com that the HAD-15-0.4-A (baby
brother to the MOTM-900 HAA-15-0.8-A) is a three terminal regulator
design and therefore suffers accordingly in ripple and load regulation.
Hmm, maybe I'll make my own 723 based PSU for the SKB. I only need
~280ma at 80% which is 350ma. I'm sure I have a circuit in one of my books.

While they aren't as good as 723-based designs, three-terminal
regulators aren't that bad. They are in almost all the gear you own
that plugs directly into the mains, with the exception of tube gear
and power amps.

Can you fit the 800mA supply?? That's what I have, and it is a
723-based design. Although I probably should buy a bigger supply.
Occasionally, it freaks out when I turn on the modular. It didn't
before, with the same modules, but I changed my distribution using
the newer MOTM boards, which for some unknown reason have these huge
bypass caps.

Imho, you can buy a better supply for less money than building one
yourself. If you need a 723-based supply, and the Power One 800mA
takes up too much space, then maybe you can get one from a different
manufacturer. Or you can but it in a separate box.
