Re: OT--mic cables

Just a dumb question:

I want to build my own mic cables, & I was looking at a Neutrik XLR jack, &
it had three
"lugs" (whatever you call those things) arranged in the middle of the plug,
& then on the outside
edge there was a regular lug. So do I wire to the lug on the outside edge,
& if so what?

Daring to be stupid

pin 1 - GND
pin 2 - hot
pin 3 - cold
chassis ground - unconnected

forget the lug, just solder the three middle pins - if you look carefully on
the plastic housing you'll find the pins are numbered

pin 1 - screen - the braided, or lapped bit
pin 2 - we in the uk call it hot - solder the red inner cable to this (in
phase signal)
pin 3 - again, we call this cold - solder the other inner cable to this (out
of phase signal)

so long as you follow this exact scheme at the other end of the cable you'll
be laughing
