Soldering, etc / 900 complete / electrical tape?

Soldering, etc / 900 complete / electrical tape?

1999-12-17 by Brousseau, Paul E (Paul)

Yes, I think that would be very helpful. I just completed the MOTM-900 last
night (YAY!), but not tested yet. My soldering skills need some work. But
hey, this my first real attempt at soldering. Everything looks good, except
that despite my dilligence in reading the instructions, I got excited and
soldered on one of the transformer leads before putting on the shrink wrap.

D'oh!! I don't want to go back and unsolder it (I used the more-is-better
method of attaching it), but I would like to cover the lead. Is electrical
tape an acceptable substitute? Or any other kind of wrap? I don't plan on
doing this reguarily, but that lead bothers me.

--PBr, who thinks heating shrink wrap with the soldering iron is terribly
tedious and now really wants a shrink wrap gun.

Tape is ok. The *secret* is to PULL IT TIGHT as you wind it. The stretching
action
causes a tight seal.

Get a heat shrink gun. Ask Santa for one (about $40)

You think it bothers you now! As you build your beautiful MOTM system,
module by module, each one constructed better than the last, your gut will
churn acid and you will choke on the toxic fumes of your guilt, as you think
about that long ago not so buried secret in the heart of your MOTM system -
that shameful hunk of electrical tape that is just waiting to announce to
the world "I AM A MISTAKE!!! I AM A MISTAKE THAT WASN'T CORRECTED!!!"

Take 15 minutes and redo it right. You'll be able to sleep at night. Give
your MOTM the construction it deserves. This time it may be electrical tape,
next time you'll be tempted to use duct tape or rosin core solder. Powerful
is the Dark Side.

The great and powerful stooge has spoken. Pay no attention to the man
behind the curtain.
