heat buildup?

heat buildup?

2007-08-03 by Larry David

Hi all - I built a two row case (20U in each row) for my MOTM-based
modular. In it now are a 900 PS, a 440 and a 110; finishing up an
800 EG kit and will be adding some DIY modules next. Right now there
is a back panel that slides on and off but it is rather kludgey and
rattles at certain bass frequencies. I'm thinking of just screwing
it in place, making the case more or less "air tight", aside from
whatever air passes through the front panel jacks or tiny "slop"
spaces between modules. Will I get too much heat build-up in the
case with no air circulation? I'd like to keep the dust out as much
as possible (and not drill ventilation holes in the back panel). For
some reason my studio gets rather dusty, though I take pains to
prevent it.

Thanks,
ld

Ventilation through the jack holes should be sufficient. There isn't much
heat generated from small linear supplies, as compared to what you have in
your computer, for instance.

Personally, I would leave a small (say 1/4") gap at the top edge of the back
cabinet. More dust will get in through the jack holes than this slit, but
the slit will still let the heat escape.

My cabinets are all completely closed. I worry more about dust and
contamination than heat (I also live on a gravel road so there is
LOTS of dust). I elevated my power supplies in the cabinets on 1"
aluminum frames so that there is air flow around all 6 sides of the
supply. I also don't load them anywhere near rated capacity. Heat
rise is negligible although I have never specifically measured it.

Thanks everyone. For now I'll keep it closed and maybe open a slit
on the top per Paul's recommendation once it starts to fill up
(which, at the rate I've been going, will be when cars fly - watched
the director's cut of Bladerunner last night, set in L.A. in 2019,
with flying cars and all...)

When I built my cabinets I asked Paul about
ventilation in the cabinets and he said the air from
the jack holes was all that was needed, I have 5 power
supplys and there has never been any heat at all. My
studio is airconditioned but I am in Miami Florida and
it is hot as hell year round. I have left the back of
my cabinets open because I like to look at the
electronics knowing that I built most of the unit. My
power supplys are mounted on the back of the cabinets,
one blacet power supply 3 motm 900 and one motm 950.

Never had any noise issues at all.

My bottom cabinet is a dot com double high slant cabinet, seen here:

http://www.pugix.com

Look at the photo. Notice the open space where end caps would go on the
top half. (See the SynthTech Logo end cap below, on the right.) That
big cabinet has one large power supply. The back is enclosed. I do
feel warm air emitting from the open slots at either end on the top
half. The single height cabinets above have had their backs removed, so
there is no concern about heat for those.
