Last days of the Kits....

Last days of the Kits....

2006-11-17 by shari_en_jin

Being that the Kits have only a few days left to live, I've been
nickle and diming it to try and make one last buy and have narrowed my
choices down to one 420MS-20 filter or a 485GX-1 filter. I already
have one 420 and love the little beast, and I've never actully heard
just how "nasty" the 485 can be, but it does sound quite tempting. So
I don't know if I should get a second 420 and get the whole double
filter bandpass thing goin on like the OG 420, or just expand my
filter pallet and get a 485...
Also, I did break down and actually calibrated the V/Oct on the 420
the other day, and it DOES make a nice little oscillator in a pinch,
so that does make me lean a little more toward that end, but then
again, if the 485 does a nice little self-oscillation jig with itself,
that would make me kinda leand toward the expanding-my-pallet
side....So, is there really anything worth getting in the 485 that
couldn't be accomplished with say a little overdriven-nasty sounding
420 that could also double as the pinch-oscillator?

All the MOTM demos are in this folder:

www.synthtech.com/demo

a) if you don't have a '440, then you REALLY needs a '440. This makes even a
better VCO, I have personally seen one calibrate the *same* as a VCO over 5
octaves (within 0.1Hz).

b) the '485 has a LOT of distortion, as a filter it's not all that good but
Trent Resnor (Nine Inch Nails) has 4 of them :)
