This cookbook is very much oriented towards the beginning synthesist. The patches are all very simple and use a standard template: 2 VCO, 1 LFO, 1 LPF (either 4 pole or 2 pole), 1 VCA, and 2 EGs (for LFP and VCA). You don't need a modular synth to recreate any of these patches, you can do them all on a Pro-One or MS-20. Using a standard template to work with any synth would normally be quite problematic, but the author has thoughtfully included a calibration section (and included an audio CD) so you can figure out which knob setting responds to 1.4 kHz on your filter (for example). Someone with a modest modular synth would likely go much beyond the simplicity of these patches. So is it worth buying? Depends on who you are. Collector of all things synth: yes. Beginning synthesist: yes. Intermediate synthesist: maybe. Advanced synthesist: no.

A better read for the more 'advanced' synthesists (Which I asume most MOTM users are, afterall it is not often that an absolute beginner stubles across an MOTM system as the first synth.....) is the following: http://www.cim.mcgill.ca/~clark/nordmodularbook/ nm_book_toc.html Eventhough it is based on the Clavia Nord Modular, the principles and theory in this book go much deeper and broader than the above cookbook.
