Update (new '650 code/'520 samples)

Update (new '650 code/'520 samples)

2006-10-16 by Paul Schreiber

Not another boring update this time :)

a) There is new MOTM-650 firmware available for beat test:

www.synthtech.com/m650/motm650v13rc2.sfi

Here are the release notes:

* Bugfix - Unison & Unison Steal voice allocation modes no longer
generate "VA_Hosed" errors when more notes played than there are
voices. Algorithm for dealing with released notes in Unison modes
changed, code cleaned up and made more understandable!
* Bugfix - Notes don't hang when note #127 received and sustain held.
* Feature Change - Note #127 (hex #7f) is ignored.

Use the MIDI updater program and install this code. Please report any bugs to me
(not the list). The mail fix is the Unison modes and with the Sustain Pedal.

b) We have new MOTM-520 Cloud Generator samples running on hardware (not a
simulation) here:

www.synthtech.com/m520

note that this hardware is 'lo-fi' recorded without any anti-aliasing output
filters, so it's going to sound a bit "clangy". But you can get the general idea
:)

chaos_nb.mp3: this is all 16 oscillators running. Starting in unison
with the chaos amplitude at minimum and the noise generator at its
narrowest bandwidth, I step the amplitude up to maximum. I'm taking
pretty coarse steps here, but the hardware allows very fine control.

chaos_wb.mp3: this is all 16 oscillators running. Starting in unison
with the chaos amplitude at minimum and the noise generator at its
widest bandwidth, I step the amplitude up to maximum. As in the
previous case, I'm taking pretty coarse steps here but the hardware
allows very fine control.

pwm_lfo_sweep.mp3 : this is one oscillator playing alone while the pwm
is swept from min to max by the lfo. The sine distortion is using a
modulation/carrier ratio of 1.25 - many other ratios are possible.

All 3 samples have sine waves on 1 channel and pulses on the other.

c) Indiana starts the kitting of 360 modules tomorrow. This is 1 full-time and 1
part-time person, so it's going to *take a while*. I spent all weekend gathering
up parts I have here to send to Indiana, and tomorrow will order the stuff I
don't have. If you have not received any *kits* yet, and your order is #248 or
below, email me.

Until Indiana can get up enough kits to ship through ~#350 without backorders,
and to kit up the kits on current backorder (mostly '510s), it's going to take
until *early November* before more kits can be shipped. Between now and then, I
plan to ship 30 assembled modules: 15 MIDI-CV and 15 others. I will be getting
MOTM-910 prototype pc boards on Friday with the new jack style.

The week of the 22nd I am in training all week (PowerPoint overload), when no
one is looking on my laptop I will be working on the Pulse Divider. Email that
week will be late at night because my network is tied up on the web conference
during the day.

d) So, for the next 2 or 3 weeks, there will appear to be a 'lull' in the
activity but remember there is more to MOTM than shipping. You have to "do
stuff" in *order* to be able to ship. That's what we will be doing, if Indiana
finishes sooner then certainly kits will start to go out.

e) 1 last item: remember the WaveWarper switches are now *all white*, but that
is the only change. It's a RoHS thing :(

Folks, I think we have a winner here.

I agree, it sounds very promising, 16 oscillators! Will you pls design an expansion board Paul
so that each oscillator can be addressed on it's own midi channel, making it a multitimbral
module, ha ha ha, it's fun dreaming.... :-)

Hi all.

These sound great! All that nasty cellophane in the high end sounds *very* cool––is there any way that the anti-aliasing filters could be switched in/out?

i.e. a dip-switch or some such?
Best,

Hello Paul, is the following clip http://synthtech.com/m520/cloud2.mp3 a clip from the
old Cloudgenerator or the new design? I found it in the same directory...

Thanks for that, that is one hell of a patch, kudos for condensing that into one module!

Yes, definitely agree. Interesting case of one module doing the job of 60+.
I'm envisioning quite a number of different uses for it.

One part of me thinks it'll make a great module as is, the other part thinks
that it'd be handy to be able to independently switch in and out the 8
constituent oscillators - so that with a large spread, you could remove
certain harmonics. Of course, someone will extrapolate that to having the
output level of each oscillator VC'able, but even a simple switch for each
*could* be cool.

The point is moot since I'm not the designer, of course, and I'll buy one
anyways! :-)

There Paul, one (more) provisionally sold.
