Hello!

Hello!

1999-12-10 by Brousseau, Paul E (Paul)

Hello all... being new to the list, I think I should introduce myself. My
name is Paul Brousseau, living in the SF bay area (Berkeley, to be
specific). I've been a fan of various kinds of music over some time, but
only recently have I been interested in creating it. (Well, that's not
entirely accurate... only recently have I gotten off my arse to do it!) So
I invested in a few fun toys, but the real joy is my Nord Modular. But as
much as I love that beast, I had to get my hands on a real modular-- and
even better build it myself! I couldn't go 100% DIY since I'm a far streach
from a good understanding of electronics, so MOTM is perfect!

I have to say, I'm really excited about being involved in the design of
further MOTM kits. What's on the drawing board?

Welcome Paul,
I too have a Nord Micro. Love it. but there's nothing like a "real" patch
cord. I have included a msg from a few days ago stating Paul S's schedule:
>#440 LPF - $179 kit - ready after xmas..?

Correct. Shipping around Jan 12th. The front panels are almost done. The
pcb
layout starts next week.
But, the pcb shop is closed from the 20th to Jan 4th.

>#??? VCLag - $125 kit - ready after xmas

No number assigned, but *probably* MOTM-830. Kit price after
Barlow/Hendry/Bradley got hold of it
more like $139.

>#??? VC Phaser ?

April. About $289 kit: it has a boatload of parts!

>#??? Triple Pre-Amp ?
>#??? Mixer ?

Preamp/mixer/env follower follow after the '440 & VC lag. Feb-March.

>#??? Sequencer ?

August.

>#??? Micro VCO ?

April/May. Since this is a simpler module, may come before the phaser.

Paul S.

Hope that helps.
Jim

Ditto on the welcome, Paul.

Just to whet your appetite, the MOTM-440 LPF is a discrete clone of the
famous SSM 2040 LPF, as made famous by the Rev 1 Prophet 5. It has VC
resonance as a bonus.

hokey -
one box of rotring chassis parts (the other bits have been in soak for the
past six months)
one medium farnell box of pink bubblewrap bags (now where did they appear
from..?)
one set of "italian" fridge magnets (don't ask...)
one roll of giftwrap
two sets of ye olde style pliers
one found screwdriver
one psion series 3 holder
one photo of me and my mate in "the old marconi" (the second best pub in the
world)
one manual for a kodak sav2000 projector
one technical drawing of a "kitty throne" unfinished (also don't ask...)
lots of dust
a lobster bath mit
sorry to have to share this, but it's probably the first time in two years
that i've found a use for my drawing board, even if it is just anecdotal...

Fair enough... my drawing board's got a bunch of half-erased ideas for BeOS
software I never wrote and is hiding behind a Babyland poster somewhere in
the studio. I ought to mount it someplace so I can make more drawing and
scriblings of things I won't get around to.

Hello!

2001-02-03 by GeorgeK

In the New York area we have a saying, "There's another one born
every minute". Well, it seems another one has lept into the void,
and alas, it appears another fine bank account is about to bite the
dust.

I'm new to the MOTM world, and Paul suggested I sign up with the
group. Provided my kit-building technique is up to snuff, I look
forward to many hours of modular alchemy. (Of couse this will be
quickly followed by a trip to the poor farm.) Unfortunately, I'm not
an electronics expert, so you may see me blathering from time to time
on this board about some disaster or another I could use help with.
Thanks in advance for putting up with it. Hopefully, with newfound
experience, I'll have some constructive input to give in return.
Heck, maybe I'll even have a DIY... ah, enough dreaming.

So, does anyone know what modules are comin down the pike?? (Jeeze,
I don't even have my first modules yet - this is worse than
controlled substances!)

Cheers,
George

Welcome to the list, George! Your addiction is shared by us all. Here
are some modules coming down the pike, in no particular order:

Mini sequencer
Oberheim SEM filter clone
Oberheim Matrix 12 filter clone
Dual VCA
Pulse divider
Mixer
Phaser
1U mini VCO

I have no idea when any of these will be available and I don't speak
for Paul. These have just been announced "in the future".

In addition, a new mult panel is available, but I don't think it's on
the website yet.

Welcome to the wonderful new world of MOTM George.

If not now, it soon will be. Paul's kits are the best in terms of not
just a great product, but a great learning experience.

> Unfortunately, I'm not an electronics expert,

Well, there are only a few "experts" around here. Most of us are
the steep side of a learning curve.

This is a tolerant group.

Absolutely. Some simple DIY is really fun and sometimes
discussed. And, some of us are into minor modifications and
fitting some other stuff from grat guys like John Blacet into our
MOTM rigs.

> this is worse than controlled substances!)

Yes. You are addicted. Get used to it.

Welcome George!

Yup, these are out of control substances!

I think Moe forgot to mention the "triple" preamp module which may be nearing
release. I believe it to be a module with a single guitar input and two
(i.e., a stereo) synth inputs (maybe line level?) to allow interfacing those
instruments with the MOTM by raising there output levels to 10V p-p standard
modular synth levels.

You'll also see a lot here in the next week or two regarding a sort of diy
project started by Moe and Larry (and others) to allow other PCBs (especially
Blacet modules, Oakley PCBs, and Encore MIDI to CV converters) to be used in
the MOTM front panel format. This is another encouraging aspect for those of
us who are trying to build large modular systems, and a testament to the
loyalty of the MOTM community.

My name is John, and I'm an analogaholic!

2001-02-03 by Jeffrey Pontius

Hi, George, there are many of us in the 'same boat' as you. I got my
first 'solder-stained' fingers from assembling motm modules (and still
have a lot of improving to do). As to sequence of modules, Paul S. posted
the following about 2 months ago (Dec. 5 message)(but, of course, things
change and I wouldn't hold him to this sequence, e.g., there's some
minisequencer discussion lurking in the background):

a) MOTM-910 --- already out
b) MOTM-101
c) Mixer
d) Dual VCA
e) VC Pulse Divider
f) Delayed Vibrato
g) Triple Pre-Amp
h) Envelope Follower
i) SEM Filter
